About Early Crosses

This is the place for photographs of early medieval crosses and related sculptures such as hogback tombstones, grave slabs and inscribed stones.

Period covered: From earliest times until the 13th or 14th centuries

Include: Anglo-Saxon, Viking, Pictish, Cornish, Scottish, Welsh, Irish and so called "Celtic Crosses" , Eleanor crosses, Dartmoor crosses, early preaching crosses.

Exclude: Market crosses, war memorials, modern crosses, memorials and gravestones

Early medieval crosses can be found in churchyards and by the roadside in many western counties of Britain and Ireland. They are scarcer in the eastern counties of England because many were destroyed by Protestant and Puritan zealots.
