Sara Heinrichs (awfulsara) is a group administrator Sara Heinrichs (awfulsara) says:

Okay, my dears. The quick and dirty way is to just size em the same, double the width of your canvas, and drop the second image into the first. But I like presenting it with a bit of flair, so this is what I do...

1. Open both images in Photoshop, or photo editing software of your choice. (Yes, you could probably figure that first one yourself, but let's be thorough.)

2. Looks: Decide how you want your dip to look, i.e. what dimensions you want to use. Using shots that are too wide side by side will make one heck of a long skinny dip, and might work better layered one on top of the other, if ya wanna get real crazy. I usually use either a 4x6 ratio for verticals or a square crop for Anything Else. But I'm boring.

3. Resize: Crop and resize accordingly. Make em the same actual size, say, fer example, 400x600 pixels, or 600x600 pixels, or make one panel a different width for a more asymetrical dip.

4. Border: It helps to have some separation between the shots, so they don't merge together too much. I usually create a thin, 1 pixel border around each one. (In PS: Select --> All, Select -> Modify -> Border: Width 1. Edit -> Fill: Choose a contrasting color - I like white or gray for a dip that will have a black border. Opacity: 75%)

5. Resize canvas: From one of the resized, border-added images, double the width of your canvas + 10 pixels on one side only (or add the width of your second panel + 10 if it is smaller/larger than the first). In other words, for a 400-pixel wide right hand image, add 410 pixels to your canvas size on the left. Those extra 10 pixels will provide a little buffer between the shots. (In PS: Image -> Canvas Size: Width 410 pixels. 'Relative' checked. Canvas extension color: black - or whatever you please for your very own dips.)

6. Add second image: Toggle back to your other image, copy and paste it into the widened canvas, drag it to the far edge so there is space between them.

7. Almost done! Finishing touch is just to add a bit more canvas around the side by side images to give them a little framing. (PS: Image -> Canvas Size: 30 pixels both width and height.) Then flatten your layers, save as "My Awful Diptych", upload, and post here for glee of masses.

Clarification: the pixel amounts given here assume a small image, 600x800 max, not an original. If your file is full size, adjust the border amounts accordingly, or you won't even be able to see it at the small size.

Questions? Clarifications? Rants and raves cause my instructions are PScentric? Might look like alot, but it is FAST. You'll be churning out diptychs before ya know it...

When I saw the pool in slide-show form, it convinced me the Awful Diptych Creator (ADC) is T H E way I want to make my diptychs. The border is super fly (or is it spelled superfly? I'm such a nerd.)

Somebody's Mom  Pro User  says:

And this, my friends, is why Sara is a professional who gets amazing results and I am just somebody's mom who is glad to get something, anything, done between lunch, laundry and homework time. I throw two images side by side, crop a section out of the resulting new image, maybe toss in a line or smudge the seam or something, and run upstairs to see what that noise was.

Ha! That's how I feel most of the time too, Somebody's Mom. I fear I spend far too much time here and neglect the housework though. :)

Yeah, but on your death bed you won't be thinking "If only I kept the house cleaner" -- you'll be geeked because you created all those diptychs.

thanks for tutorial - I especially like the way that the 1 pixel border has some transparency - so it is still part of the pic - while defining it's edge.
Thats a nice subtle touch.

Very clear (clearer than instructions in the "Help" of my software! Before I read this, I had made one (see photos of gilmarcil if you wish); i'm happy with my first creation with a score of 80%. The 20% missing mark is about the disappearance of the pink frame on the right pic. Did not manage to correct that! Suggestion?? (I made this diptychs with Paint.net)

Thank you again!

I followed your directions and almost had it. But I know nothing about Photoshop and so have no clue how to use layers.

Everything pretty much worked except, my left side photo won't move over in order for me to place my right side photo on the resized canvas.

Also, when I copy and paste my right side photo, it pastes itself behind the left side photo...I can't seen it after that.

I am going to crazy and am hating that I have Photoshop right now...it is soooooo hard to use.

peculiarpics  Pro User  says:

OK - I am clueless when it comes to PS, but I am trying diligently to learn.

I have followed the directions - which are very clear by the way. I get all the way to copying and pasting my second image. When I paste the image I don't see the image at all, but just a faint outline filled with white (which is what I chose for my background color. I can move it, but still the image does not appear.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Any help will be appreciated!

I join peculiarpics in being completely clueless when it comes to PS.

I too followed the directions and got stumped at the same place - when I have to copy and paste the second image onto the enlarged canvas - I can't seem to find the pasted image - just an empty white box.

If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

USING MS POWERPOINT... Sooo simple and extremely fast. Just do slide 1, drop and size images (helps to put a little vignette frame around first in Picnik) and then... important... SAVE AS whatever file name and IMPORTANT... File Type is .JPEG... Then choose "Current Slide Only" and "No" to "Change Presentation 1?". Voila!

Hydrophobic Heffalump - taking an extended break  Pro User  says:

Another option is to use Publisher (we've got '07): insert both pics, arrange them as desired, select both pics, right click, save as picture (save it as a JPEG file, the default is a PNG file). Good luck!
