About Duke University Physics Department

Since the 1930s, Duke Physics has been a world-class center for research and education. Today, Duke Physics is a vibrant community of faculty and students working together to advance the frontiers of physics. Members of the department participate in interdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues from physics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, the life sciences, and medicine at Duke and other universities in the United States and abroad. Duke physicists play significant roles in all the major international physics projects, from the CERN’s Large Hadron Collider in Geneva to FERMI lab in Chicago to the Super Kamiokande in Japan. Undergraduate and graduate work alongside energetic and responsive faculty, and, like their mentors, often travel for research and collaboration. Duke’s location in the Research Triangle of North Carolina, an area renowned as a hub of scholarship and innovation, offers members of the Department unique collaboration opportunities with other universities as well as local research and technology institutions.
