About Dromore, County Down
A photo group to share photographs of the small town of Dromore, County Down, in Northern Ireland. Dromore gets its name from the Gaelic Drum Mor, meaning great ridge. This may refer to the monument known locally as Dromore Mound - the Norman Motte and Bailey castle and earthworks from the 13th Century.
Dromore is approximately 20 miles south of Belfast, on the main road between Belfast and Dublin.
Other local features include the Cathedral Church of Christ the Redeemer - the Church of Ireland (Anglican) Cathedral; the Viaduct which used to carry trains across the River Lagan on the GNR (Great Northern Railway) line; another castle, the Market House and Stocks; St Colman's Roman Catholic Church on its commanding position on Gallows Street; as well as several Presbyterian Churches.
Feel free to add your photos of our historic town and the surrounding countryside.
