Dixie Drug Store, Memphis Tennesse
 |
These are pictures of Dixie Drug Store in Memphis Tennesse, in the 1920's and 30's. This was my grandmother's, Frances Levine Freedman (Salling), drugstore. Frances was the 1st woman pharmacist at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, as well as the 1st woman pharmacist in New York. She was very much an independent woman, having many articles written about her being a business woman and then single working mom to my mother after her husband was killed in 1930.

If you are interested, I posted the articles about my grandmother. 1920 - 1930. They talk about her views and success of building the successfull drug store. This will take you to her album, the articles are at the bottom. You should be able to read them when you view larger size. Let me know if you can't.

Thanks, I'll try something else. I'll type the articles and put them in the comments so everyone can read the article there.

I've got my Grandmothers letters to my Grandfather from 1916 - 1919. I've just begun scanning and reading them. They talk about her job at Bellevue Hospital in the pharmacy. Fascinating!

Hi. I'm new to this group. Just wanted to say what interesting photos and stories you provided about your grandmother. She must have been something! I recenty posted a photo to the group called "Dixie Pharmacy". Although it has no interesting family tale attached to it, I do provide a paragraph about the origin of the word "Dixie" and how that word took on different meanings over time. (This description is posted directly under the photo). Thought it may be of some interest to read, as your grandmother worked at a "Dixie" pharmacy in the 20's.
(Wow, those letters must be quite special too. I have one that my great-gradfather wrote to my great-gradmother during WWI, which I keep in a bank vault. I consider it one of the most precious things I have).
