OK, now you all understand that responding to these threads is going to help your partner in finding inspiration for the quilt they make you so how about we add fabric into the mix.

Imagine you are walking along the road and pass a new fabric shop and it stocks every line currently available on the market. You walk in and, as the first customer ever to walk in, the nice lady says to you: "congratulations, as you are my first ever customer you can take a FQ bundle of any three lines in here". So which three would you pick - and remember CURRENTLY available.

I would take Punctuation, Innocent crush and La Petite Ecole. BUT let me add that I don't want anyone to feel the need to go shopping for this swap - please use what you have in your stash. These three fabrics are just styles and colours I love - to add into the mix of things that might help you to find inspiration.

On the other hand, if my partner-to-be joins in this thread and mentions a fabric I happen to have a pile of sitting in my stash well then I guess that makes my life a bit easier.

Can I just add that of course I also love Sherbet Pips, a wonderful new collection by a wonderful British designer but I think that strictly it's not available yet (but I have a few little scraps of it so if my partner likes it then they're in luck...!)

Parisville by tula pink, central park by Kate Spain and far far away 2 by Heather Ross would keep a smile on my face until April when the pips are released :-) thank you generous quilt shop lady, there should be one of these on every high street! ;-)

Oh my goodness, what a question for someone on a fabric diet!

Here are my 3:

Dream on
Ruby Star Rising
and a little older but still freely available, Nicey Jane

I love Sherbet Pips too & of course Far, Far Away but as it's a higher cost linen didn't include it in my 3.

Of course, I'd never expect anyone to buy specific fabric for me but my picks should help a partner pin down my taste.
{Leila} Where Orchids Grow Posted 15 years ago
Great question Lynne!

Ruby Star Rising
Far Far Away 2
Hope Valley

Does it really have to be three? I also love Tufted Tweets, Innocent Crush Sherbet Pips, Parisville, Fandango, Bliss.... oh this list will be endless I can see why you said pick three now lol
flamingstitches Posted 15 years ago
It's a pity there are no links or photos of the selected lines - it would make the thread so much more interesting, especially for those that don't get into patchwork fabric shops.
Di2Quilt Posted 15 years ago
What to do if I can't decide on my top three favorites?

Another question I have is that though I have access to the major brands here in Taiwan, the quilting stores in my town don't carry most of the designers that have been mentioned so far. I wonder if my partner will accept different fabric selections??
{Leila} Where Orchids Grow Posted 15 years ago
Don't get stuck on the fabrics mentioned here. I'm in no way expecting my partner (if I get in that is) to buy fabrics just because I mentioned them. This is just meant to give more clues as to what types of fabrics we love most. What style of print what type of colour...you see.
isisjem22 Posted 15 years ago
Ok, Well I'd select three ranges that I have been eyeing up but not purchased:
Parisville by Tula Pink,
Innocent Crush by AMH
The Farmdale - I am kicking myself for not buying a fat quarter bundle on etsy before Christmas because they did a bundle with my fav's from the range!

Now seeing as it's such a nice shop I'd probably have to buy a few things while I was in there. I'd pick a couple of prints from Ruby Star Rising - in particular that view finder print (I still have my view finder upstairs!) and some more Hope Valley - of course if she has anything by Heather Ross that would probably go into the basket too.

(Yes, I know Lynne I'd have fallen right off Angela's fabric diet that week!)

PS I can't wait for Sherbet Pips either. I saw but procrastinated on the early release charm packs that were popping up on etsy and missed them.

Thanks for the clarification! I'm going to think about my top three then!
Lynne @ Lilys Quilts Posted 15 years ago
I've amended my intro to this thread because my feeling is that we should all make these quilts from our stash if at all possible - I mean I know there were one or two people who did shop for a particular line of fabric their partner loved in the last round but I intend to make my doll quilt from my stash and I really hope my partner does the same for me :-) More eco-friendly and ties in with a few people's new year fabric diets!
bubbabean22 Posted 15 years ago
I agree. Mine will be from stash! I will make something my partner will love.....if I get in ;0)
flamingstitches Posted 15 years ago
I'm on the fabric diet too and would love to make the DQS from my fabric stash - if I make the cut
Oh Sew Liz Posted 15 years ago

Sampaguita Quilts Posted 15 years ago
Farmer's Market (Sandi Henderson - harder to find now, but my all-time fave!)
Parisville (Tula Pink)
Antiquity (Michael Miller)

I have an, ummm, considerable(?) stash and chances are that I would be able to make almost anything from it - but shopping is still more than likely!
quiltedoma Posted 15 years ago
I have to admit to being ignorant when it comes to designer names and fabric lines. When I go into a fabric store, I look at the colors and prints and patterns and couldn't care less about the name of the designer. Over the past year I have been more aware of fabric lines, but most of the time they are already off the shelves when I discover them. Which opens a question - how do you find all these lines before they are sold out??
mamacjt Posted 15 years ago
I, too, am not a "designer name" fabric shopper, although (by mistake) I might have a few in my stash just because I liked them. Come to think of it, I did love Remix, but only because of the designs and colors. Personally, I don't think that anyone would be "put off" just because you didn't use "designer" fabrics in the quilt you made. If you try to go by your partner's likes and dislikes that they provide, and do your job of stalking properly, chances are you will "nail" them right on without getting all "fancy" so don't worry about going out and buying something special.
isisjem22 Posted 15 years ago
I've only discovered the designer ranges in the past year. Previous to that most of my shopping was done online via swatches and I had no idea of the names of the fabrics so just bought what I liked.

sewjo2009 Posted 15 years ago Edited by sewjo2009 (member) 15 years ago
I have to agree with comments. I certainly do not go for designer or range, I just go for fabrics that say hallo to me, no matter what range or designer.

In fact I would hate to have to try to make a quilt out of fabrics that did nothing for me because my partner favours them. So I also hope that if I am chosen for the next round my partner will allow me to use fabrics that we both could enjoy.

I certainly enjoy the "fancy" fabric that Designer's put out; but also do not restrict my purchasing or LOVE to only Designer lines.

While I do love the 3 current lines below, I'm including them to also show you my taste in color, print and pattern.

Ty Pennington -Impressions

Amy Butler -Soul Blossoms

Patricia Bravo -Modern Affair
craftingmomof1 Posted 15 years ago
I would say:

Denyse Schmidt - Hope Valley
Heather Ross - FFA2
Joel Dewberry - Modern Meadow

A FQ bundle of each would be great; however, there are a lot of other fabrics that I like too, but the entire line of the fabrics above appeal to me rather than just a particular colour range - does that make sense?
::Sardaana Posted 15 years ago
I'd go with

Tufted Tweets
FFA II
Innocent Crush

It's really hard to choose just three, but these are my favourites of favourites from last and this year.
FlossieBlossoms Posted 15 years ago
I don't have anything on my "lust to have" list right now, except I'll be getting some Sherbet Pips when it's available.

I seem to like just about anything and everything as long as it's bright and happy and not dull and gloomy.
madewithlovebymandy Posted 15 years ago
OOOHH hard hard hard...

Parisville (already have though :))
Ruby Star Rising - (expensive Kokka)
Innocent Crush

I would be making be making my dolls quilt from my stash and snippets off the bolt from my shop unfortunately don't stock Free Spirit or Kokka though (specialise in Kona solids :))
Momtastic Stitch Posted 15 years ago
There are way too many things on my 'I want' list....
Innocent Crush is a new love and perhaps that Parisville and I love all sorts of polka dots and stripes in a sick must have way

But honestly I like things that look vintage or are reclaimed from vintage findings. I like bright colors, dull colors, 'ugly' colors...I like to be surprised! I won't make my partner's quilt from these type of fabrics if they are not into that sort of thing. I do NOT expect my partner to go out and buy new fabric and I will be using things from my well stocked stash!
Fun & Comfort Quilts Posted 15 years ago
I wouldn't know most designer fabric lines if they bit me! But I must admit a drooling admiration of anything Kona...

I too am very ignorant of what designer fabrics are out there - mostly as I know there is no way I can afford them - especially here in the UK! I do lust after the Kona solids though.

And is it sacrilege to say that the Denyse Schmidt fabrics that everyone raves over (Hope Valley, Katie Jump Rope, Flea Market Fancy) just do nothing for me?

I have a very basic stash so may buy a FQ or 2 depending upon what ideas come to mind for my partner.
Better Off Thread Posted 15 years ago Edited by Better Off Thread (member) 15 years ago
I will admit, I am a designer snob. It just seems to be the type of prints I am attracted to. Of course that doesn't mean my partner has to use them. Show me something new to me, that you already have!
I will most likely be using from my stash, like I did last time (IF I get in...fingers ccrossed!!)

I would have to choose:
-Modern Meadow by Joel Dewberry (I had a charm pack of this and I think I used every little scrap of it)

-In an alternate universe where it is still available: Flea Market Fancy by Denyse Schmidt. (I have hope valley and katie jump rope, but only a little FMF)

-Kaffe Fasset: not sure what line. I am newly into his fabrics and would love some to play with.
SewSheDid Posted 15 years ago Edited by SewSheDid (member) 15 years ago
This is a great question...I think adding what we like about these makes it even more useful.
My current favourites would be:
Etsuko Furuya's Echino fabrics....love the designs as well as texture and rich colours.
Denyse Schmidt's Hope Valley/ Katie Jump rope...love the vintage-y feel that's oh so modern too
and Kaffe Fassets Dots...or simply dots in general!
of course with a dash of solids thrown in!
OMG, I just went and checked out the Ruby star rising that some of you are talking about. I.AM.IN.LOVE.
rafael's mum Posted 15 years ago Edited by rafael's mum (member) 15 years ago
I understand, this is not what I would like my partner to use! (stash is fine!) but thinking about top3 favourites is fun!

At the moment;
soul blossoms, amy butler
echino (always!) (and any!)
pop garden/bijoux, heather bailey
french general (everything!)
fig tree
the westminster 3 (or is that 4?) (kaffe & co)

oops.. did I go past three yet?
needleanddime Posted 15 years ago Edited by needleanddime (member) 15 years ago
I'm definitely not one to go for a whole range of fabrics. Even ranges that I "love" usually have about 2-3 prints that I want from them. Scrappy, all the way over here!!

But, that said, and in the sprit of the (quite fun) game, I do like the more toned-down (like these -- scroll down a bit) and monochromatic prints in the Lecien My Folklore range (are those out of print / hard to find? I'm not sure but I'm trying to play the game fairly!),

Good Folks by Anna Maria Horner (especially the filigree patterns) or Meadowsweet by Sandi Henderson (I feel pretty similarly about these two), and

Any of the Kei Honeycomb dots. I just love the spacing of these dots!

If I can pretend that it's a "range" of fabric, though, I'd replace the folklore with the

2010 Stocking Bundle from Purl Soho. I love all of these!

This is though, as so many others have said, just to give an idea of the kinds of things I like. I'd certainly not expect someone to run out and buy any of these to use in a quilt for me (assuming that I get in)!

I would like to have a selection of Heather Ross's latest collection for Spoonflower. BasicGrey's Basics collection, and I'm waiting for the Pips to come out. I seldom like whole lines of fabric, and as I have a very large collection of fabrics, I usually just buy quarter yards of various things when I need to feed my addiction. Anything with text I in neutrals are hard to pass up. I'm not a huge Amy Butler or Denyse Schmidt fan either. I have a small selection of some of the Hope Valley, but only because I sold it in my shop.

I love Bliss more every time I see it.

JanBran Posted 15 years ago
I'm another of those who don't take much notice of who a designer of fabric is. I usually go and mooch around the fabric store just picking up the fabric that catches my eye and I want to add to my stash - unless of course I am looking for something to match fabric I already have. Like others I'm trying to keep to my fabric diet this year and will be making my swap ( if I get in ) from my stash.
lisajanlovestoquilt Posted 15 years ago
I must admit I love trying to collect up my fav. fabric lines. Although I don't just buy a fabric because it's in a collection - I have to like it! My three would be:

And I'd love some of the Ronnie Walter's cute caravans from the On The Road collection. I agree with everyone that Sherbet Pips looks really sweet too!

I would have to go with the following (pictures courtesy of Hawthorn Threads):

Retro Mod - Micheal Miller

I love the simplicity of the designs. And who could resist those wonderful polka dot fabrics. Oh, and the fleur de lis like patterns are very lush to me.

Night and Day - Robert Kaufmann

I love black, white, and primary fabric designs. They are very crisp and show off the pattern lovely. It reminds me of Mondrian and Franz Kline a lot.

High Society (Kristian A. Howell) - Anthology

This was a company I saw on a fabric "reporter" blog. I am really digging their lines right now.

I usuallly love all Kate Spain and Fig Tree collections. Collections from the past I've liked have been Katie Jump Rope, Flea Market Fancy, Heather Ross Munki stuff, and Heather Bailey Pop Garden/Bijou.

Current ones are: Sherbet Pips (LOVE!), Nicey Jane, and Castle Peeps.

Whether you dig designer fabric or not, I think this is a good way of giving your partner another feel for your taste. I don't care if you use designer fabric or not, but you will know from this list the types of colors and themes I like KWIM? Good topic!

well i really like a lot of different types of fabrics but if i had to pick three: Amy Butler -Soul Blossoms, tula Pink parisville, early bird cosmo cricket............ you know it is so hard to just pick three. I hope someone makes it from their stash in any color and design they choose, that's what makes the swaps intriguing and so much fun!!
brittneyanderson Posted 15 years ago
Right not, favorite lines out there include Innocent Crush, Parisville, and Soul Blossoms. I love the colors in all those lines, and the beautiful patterns!

I'm also an indecisive woman, so I'm going to pick from an imaginary jar & say:
Kumari Garden by Dena Fishbein (you can see it here: http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/new_arrivals),
Bliss by Bonnie & Camille
bliss blenders by traceyjay
(these are all favorite prints of mine too),

Monaluna Mingle [https://www.flickr.com/photos/ryanwalshquilts/4474809066/ ](I love those squares, the circles, the leaves. so many fun blender prints),

any & all Riley Blake circles/dots
Dots Set #1 by Ted'n'Lucy
(I love those prints! :) (again, perfect blenders, etc.)

OK, I got Tufted Tweets so I'm switching to Parisville :)

Wow, there's so much fabric-y goodness on here I could EAT IT.

My top three right now would be anything Anna Maria, Ruby Star Rising, and Hope Valley. A girl can dream.
Flutter Kat Posted 15 years ago
Mmmmm fabric :)
3 of my picks that I can think of right now are
Meadowsweet 1
Farmdale
bliss
But if I thought about it in another 10th mins I'd prob think of others. Should give you an idea of my fav colours though.
And I love Japanese imports prints but haven't actually been brave enough to order any yet so if you have some in your stash... feel free ;)

Sunkissed - Sweatwater for Moda
Swoon - Melissa Averinos for Andover
Central Park - Kate Spain for Moda

this was hard for me......it's been a long time since i actually looked at fabric....don't get me wrong i LOVE fabric and have had hard time at cutting myself off.....so this year i'm going to try really hard to work down my stash and only buy once month.
terrikuns Posted 15 years ago
Great question!

I've become obsessed with Kate Spain - Verna is my favorite, but I'm also collecting Central Park and Fandango.

I could live on just those three, but I'm also eagerly awaiting Sherbert Pips and Sunkissed.

I love Katie Jump Rope, Central Park, and Modern Meadows. I know they said just three, but I also love Sanctuary, Red Letter Day, and Heather Ross Goldfish in bags.
grammypat1 Posted 15 years ago
I love pretty much ALL fabric - not so crazy about thimbleberries, but otherwise, I love them all.....don't think I really have a favorite three though, although I do love Heather Ross and Kaffe :) Having said all of that, I will love anything my partner sends!
meg_kay77 Posted 15 years ago
It is just so hard to narrow it down to 3!

seen as though I would be getting them for free I would get things that I love, that I don't have yet which would be:

Sherbet Pips
Latest Echino
Sanctuary by Patty young

If it was my old favs it would be

Nicey Jane
Modern Meadow
Good Folks / Little Folks
Love / Soul Blossoms

So hard to only choose 3!!!
Sewing Under Rainbow Posted 15 years ago
My new faves are pretty the same as yours (Ruby Star Rising, Sherbet Pips, FFA, Echino, Sunkissed etc.).

But what I like the most is just one collection: Ta Dots from Michael Miller! Best for me ever:)
Petitselefants Posted 15 years ago
This really is so hard to narrow down. I'll go with three that I either don't have or have very little of and would love:

Amy Buter - Soul Blossoms
The latest Echino line
Kaffe Fasset - the collection with the paperglass etc (lots of circles)
meliketocraft Posted 15 years ago
i usually dont like ENTIRE lines... there is almost always pinks in a line and i am just not a pink person, but here are three designers that i typically love most of their stuff:

joel dewberry
Etsuko Furuya
denise schmidt

but i love tons and tons of others... and the sherbet pips is HIGH on the list as is the cloud 9 nature walk... when they both come out! the nature walk palette is DIVINE!

I love everything....

If I just had to, had to pick it would be

Parisville by Tula Pink
Innocent Crush by Anna Maria Horner
Kaffe Fassett
Anita Monery Posted 15 years ago Edited by Anita Monery (member) 15 years ago
It is really hard for me to chose just 3 fabric lines.

Summertime by Barbara Jones
Tailor Made by Cosmo Cricket
Weekends by Erin McMorris

and just about anything by Heather Ross
