About Photo Madness: 2012 Champion swissrolli !!
Photo Madness! Enter the annual Art Off to be crowned Flickr Photo Champion.
Just as the NCAA March Basketball Tournament brings together 64 of the best teams to decide the4 National Champion, March photo Madness brings together 64 of the best Flickr Photographers for a tournament with world-wide implications on the line.
Here's how it works. Starting march 17th, there will be 32 1st-round matches posted. These will feature head to head matchups between the invited photographers. The winners of each round will move on and face a new match a mere day later. The 16 winners of that round will get a glorious 5-day break until the next weekend, when they will face the same grueling schedule.
As if that weren't hard enough, the photos in each round must have been taken in the prior WEEK! No old stuff...you have keep shooting!
So, who gets to decide the winners of each round? YOU! The members of the group will vote on each matchup and decide who gets to go on, and who has to go home.

Swissrolli won the 2nd tournament by defeating Tiff in the final.

Here's a list of other tournament-style voting groups that I'm aware of on Flickr.
First, there's the original Matchpoint, which has origins stretching back many years. They run one tournament after another, usually takes about a month, with 16-32 participants. They've had dozens of tournaments! All tournaments looked to be themed. I don't think there's a time requirement for the entered photos, but I'm sure the rules there will make it clear.
Next, there's grumbledog's long-dormant The Photography Bowl, which was inspired by the 2008 edition of Photo Madness, then known as DMU March Madness. In this tourney, grumble decided a theme and gets 16 or 32 contestants to sign up. Then there's 1 round a week for 4 or 5 weeks until the winner is declared. Generally, the photos must be taken the week of the competition although there are exceptions. Past bowls include The Troll Bowl, The Chameleon Bowl and The Delete Bowl.
The biggest year-round tournament group is Flickr 64 Challenge launched by Jordy R but now run by a cast of many. They look set to go year round, so keep your eyes open for more contests and a name change.
If you prefer your matchups to feature more r-rated banter, then check out FU64.
Of course, there's still the (maybe not so) original Photo Madness, now in its third year.
