About DMAX
DMAX, to put it simply, is the darkest area of your print, or, the lightest area of your negative. This area would also be the film border, or the space between frames. To make a print showing DMAX is to print a negative showing this border.
Prior to the advent of digital imaging, it was considered desirable to crop one's images in-camera (and, in fact, it still is), and show this in the final print by including the thin black border of the frame, or by using a filed-out carrier to include some of the frame numbering or sprocket holes.
DMAX is a group for shots taken on film & printed full-frame, including the film's black (DMAX) border, frame numbers and/or sprocket holes.
