Genius, the auto sleep is a nightmare. The number of times I have nearly thrown mine across the room.
I wonder if an elastic band with something threaded onto it to depress the button might be a better option to the tape. Thanks for the tip.

Steve,
That rubber band must be a better idea, because tape can get loose.
Enjoy your new always on flash!

Had a bit of a play and this is what I came up with:

I couldn't find a rubber band the right size, so used an elasticated ponytail hair tie (always have some of these in my camera bag). This combined with a mini peg paper clip to depress the LCD display light button worked like a dream.
Here are the bits which probably go under different names in other parts of the world, so hopefully you can recognise similar products from the pic:

When not in use, the hair tie can be left on the flash and the mini peg can simply be clipped onto it, simple but effective.
Many thanks for the idea Eric.

I don't have the 430EZ model, only the 430EX. Does the EZ model not have "Custom Function Settings" feature? Couldn't find a users manual using GOOGLE / CANON sites, so I figure the EZ must not have this setting. Just wondering?

No Curt, it doesnt have custom functions sadly.
In it's day it was top of the range with the EOS film systems, now the technology is rather dated and can only be used in manual on Canon's DSLR's. On camera, you only need to press the test button to wake it, but off camera having to go and wake it up, is not really convenient a lot of the time.

You should be able to permanently depress it forever. Simply take a small piece of 1/16 inch steel mending and epoxy it across the LED button. It will stay depressed forever without limiting your access to the battery compartment or worrying about it falling off, or making it look chintzy. If you paint the strip black no one will even know.
OK..... I should have mine by Friday. I'll keep you updated as to whether my fix works.

@Zarathu:
I want to warn you before you make permanent mod's!
Once I had a function that didn't work with the LED button pressed in.
So I had to loosen that button to change the other settings and press it again in.

OK, Eric.(my real name is actually ERIC, I've just been using Zarathu on the internet since about 1992).
I actually glued a threaded bolt to the edges over top of the spot where the button is. Then I've used a screw. The screw screws in to push the button in, but screws out if I don't need the button. It's quick and simple and almost elegant.
I'll post some photos when I figure out how.

@ Zarathu:
I made som brackets to hold my flashes, (see my DIY set) and for the 430EX I made also a screw to hold down the button.
With 2 small turns it's pressed in or out.
It's to late now to take my gear to make a photo, but I will shoot one a.s.a.p.

I have finally put together a picture of how I modified my 430 EZ to disable the 90 sleep mode, for when I want it disabled.

I have 5 canon 430ez which I use with my Canon 7d.
I also wanted to use these with my Panasonic G1, which I use with older lenses to aid my learning (full manual and all that).
I purchased some cactus v2's and walked into the sleep problem.
Two elastic bands.
A bolt with two nuts on it, and now I can play.
I am not aware of any trigger that will wake up a 430ez on a G1, so this thread has helped.

I use Yongnuo's on my 7d, just to avoid any confusion, but Cactus v2's on my Panasonic G1

Zarathu's fix is truly elegant. Rubber bands and such are a pain.
The Minolta 4000AF has the same annoying issue as does my 420EZ. The Yongnuo RF602RX will wake up both of them but only when shoe mounted and not by the sync cord.
