You look at a picture. It may or may not look normal on the surface, but some gut feeling tells you there is something really amiss here, and it may be something you'd rather not think about. It may be dramatic, or you may merely sense undercurrents of some terrible sorrow here, or tragedy, menace, dread, or madness--you may not be able to put your finger on which, but like the proverbial restless ghost, this kind of picture just won't let you go. If you have a picture like this, it may belong here. If you have received a solicitation for an image, you may be sure it belongs here.

This group is NOT about pictures of blood, gore, cheesy Halloween or other costumes and props, monster outfits, run-down "haunted house" buildings, weird makeup, double-exposure "ghost" pictures, melodramatic poses, sociopolitical propaganda, satanic iconography, or other stock clichés. There are more appropriate groups for such material elsewhere. It is also not about pictures whose mood is merely grave, solemn, or somber. However beautiful such pictures may be, they don't belong here unless they have that extra frisson described above.

If this description sounds confusing, you may start by perusing the pool itself to familiarize yourself with some of the material here; I also recommend that you look at the old Deletion Log to see what sort of images are inappropriate, and why. We have received a number of submissions which were fine pictures, but unfortunately off-theme. We don't enjoy rejecting pictures, but this group exists to highlight a few particular types of images, and we will not hesitate to refuse what seems extraneous.
