My Weekend with USA Rugby
|
I traveled to Glendale, Colorado this weekend to cover the USA Super League Final match between New York Athletic Club, and Belmont Shore Rugby Club.
A tremendous facility at Infinity Park, a facility designed special for the sport, under the governing body of USA Rugby.
I was granted all access credentials, and you can see by the photos, that the game was very, very physical. A tremendous match that ended in sudden death overtime.
A challenging game to cover, as it started in bright sunshine that allowed me great exposures, and ended in the dark under the lights, with me pushing to 1000+ ASA. Also a great learning experience as ESPN Classic covered the event live. they put a few restrictions on me, with one being, "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY" during the post game, trophy awarding ceremony.
Enjoy the photos, let me know what you think

I missed this shot, due to ESPN's flash photography restriction, which I wasn't told about until just before this shot was taken.

Some really good shots there AF, however the no flash policy for the presentations has led to a lot of movement in the last couple of shots. I'm sure that there shouldn't have been any issues with using the flash - it's most probably ESPN protecting their rights, that said if you're getting paid to shoot the game then they've effectively spoiled you rights.
As for Rugby games starting in bright sun light and ending in pouring rain under floodlights, welcome to world of summer rugby (British summer that would be...:O) )

Yes I was on assignment for USA Rugby, I was getting paid to shoot, however when I raised my concerns to the event organizers afterwards, they sided with ESPN as they want to publicize and popularize the sport here in the US, ESPN is a great avenue for them. Hey they're my employer for the assignment, it's their turf, I didn't make an issue of it, just wished I knew ahead of time.
I was paid, and I keep the rights to the photographs, so I'm in the process of shopping them to a few Rugby magazines here in the US, as this was as ESPN stated in their broadcast, the biggest Rugby Match in the US this year!
As for the ever changing lighting conditions, it was tough as no one expected the game to go that late, regulation, two overtime periods, and another 10 minutes of sudden death!
Mark, please make some notes on my photos and show me how I could have cropped better. If it helps me improve the photo, I'm in!

In that final shot you used ISO100 - I would have been tempted to ramp it up to 400 or higher, which the 5D should have been perfectly happy with very little noise.

Added the notes Tony. It's actually only the first 2 photos.
"Sudden Death"... that always reminds me of Team Fortress 2 lol.

Thanks Mark,
Your feedback is dead on.
Octopuscard, you're right about going with a higher ISO, unfortunately I had a split second to switch off my flash, and shoot whatever was going on.
