Digiscoping with the Nikon P5100

The P5100 is a minor upgrade (from 10 megs to 12.1 megs ) from the P5000 and seems to be using the same body and lens. The AF seems to be the same (slow) and after 3 frames the 12.1 meg images seem to take longer than the P5000. Here are a few samples from the camera today. No vignetting with the 30x and 45x eyepieces. You need to zoom the camera lens half way with the zoom eyepiece.
The first is straight from the camera and then a crop and then a crop/adj.

I thought I would test the P5100 at full camera zoom. The tin cans are my standard test chart at about 30 metres. The magnification is equivalent to 5400 mm or 108 x as the lens is 35 - 120 mm .Neil.

Stunning detail, even at exteme magnification. Do you think this will displace the Nikon 8400 for general fieldwork, or does the EVF and manual focus availability of the 8400 trump the 5100?

Len,
Sorry I've been late in responding. I've been away in India.
I use both cameras. The P5100 handles the 12 megs very fast so while the 8400 is processing I switch cameras. Neil.

i'm enjoying the P5100 and upgraded from P5000 just before my Mexico trip.
it's very similar to the P5000 in performance as Neil said but picture quality is marginally better.

I just got myself a P5100. Your photos convinced me to buy it neilfif11.

Just did a small test today an it seems to be good. I am using a Kamakura SP83 ED scope and 20-60x zoom.

But it is one thing I don´t like. With the zoom at 20x I have the normal vignetting. But on the cameras LCD the right part of the circle is very dark. But after I focus the camera I see the whole circle. Some of the images still got the dark part after the image was taken.

The camera is centered, and I have the UR-E20 filter adapter and an adapter to fit the zoom so that is not the problem.

I have just joined this group and would welcome any help and advice members can give using the Nikon Coolpix P5100 I have bought specifically for Digiscoping. I have taken two test pictures with the camera fully zoomed and experienced no vignetting. Information about the most appropriate camera settings would be particularly helpful.
I already have a KOWA TSN1 (non ED) scope with a 25x eyepiece and have bought a Visionary Universal Bracket for the scope (this fits around the eyepiece and is the same as sold as the Vortex Universal Digital Adapter - Small in the US). In the long term, if I can become proficient with this set up, I intend to buy a Nikon ED82 scope and FSB-6 bracket.
