About Diatoms

Diatoms are unicellular algae encased in siliceous (glass) frustules. They are used extensively in environmental monitoring because they are sensitive to aquatic pollution. They also preserve well in freshwater and marine sediments. By examining their fossils in sediments, an environmental history can be reconstructed spanning tens to many thousands of years.

This group will allow diatomists to share photographs of diatom species, which can be particularly useful in getting information on their taxonomy and ecology.
