Diafine and Neopan 400?

view profile

Fluukk says:

I just developed my first two 120 film rolls in Diafine. I used Nelson Foto's suggested development process mods on both a roll of Fuji Acros 100 and Neopan 400. The results with Acros were pretty good, the Neopan not even 'ok'. Anyone have good results with Diafine and Neopan? Can you please tell me how your prcess with Diafine to optimize results- otherwise I might just stick with ACros or maybe Tri-X.

Thanks! :)

Acros and Diafine is a stellar combination so I am not surprised you liked the results. Acros is a T-grain film and requires 5 + 5 development where almost all other films need only 3+3.

For Diafine to work optimally, you need to be shooting at the recommended ISO. For neopan 400 that means ISO 640.

You can actually develop them in the same tank. Extra time in the solution does no harm, too little time does.

ok thank you- I'll give it a go again- I think I was trying at 640 but the neg came out spotty, streaked and very low contrast and sharpness. Part of the trouble is I used the old style film apron type development tank i think.

Hi Fluukk

Those apron tanks are not good for short development times I find. Get a better tank and reel. I hate the look of Diafine on T type films. I just mixed up a new batch and will use it tonight with some Arista Premium. at 1250. See ya over at Nelson

I am curious as to why you hate the look of Diafine on T-grain film. Do you prefer less contrast?

For me, I don't like Diafine with Tri-X 320 or 400. I think the negatives look flat and I have to boost the contrast.

It just looks flat all across the board in fact I prefer Rodinal for T grain films. Look at my photos Contrast has to do with my mood ... I am using Tri-X again after a few years away from it loving it.. Diafine HC-110 Rodinal but no D-76.

Using a "wrong" EI will not result in spotty negatives, but will just move the characteristic curve along the x axis, which might result in lost shadows / highlights.

I measured the characteristic curve of Neopan 400 in Diafine a few weeks ago and found that it's actually best rated at EI 400. This will ensure a log density of 0.1 for a zone 1 exposure. The contrast is a bit higher than I usually like (grade 1 or 2, instead 2 or 3). I like the results I've achieved using this combination a lot.

I shot some Neopan 400 last October of a Beatlemania concert, and have been thinking of trying diafine with it. Still might. I think I shot it at 1600asa.
