I've had a phone photo published in an online and software based travel guide (taken with a 6230i). Also, of the 7 of my photos that have been in Explore 2 were taken on my phone (with my n73, including my most viewed photo), and 1 with a compact/bridge camera (fuji s5700). So it's more than possible to take images that people will appreciate without an SLR. With a suitable subject and good composition you can get something very impressive.

Just a thought, for the voting, wouldn't it be better to have the voting in the photography forum at DDN to allow non Flickr account holders to still participate in the voting? A new sticky thread that links to the compeition page on Flickr with all the photos but then the votes are cast on DDN. Just thinking to try and not lose the focus of the photograph forum there.

We could do, and if it works that way keep doing it.
It'll mean a full 2 weeks voting period though as it'd be harder to keep track of if everyone has voted (assuming there's lots of votes).

okay, another thought. Keep the voting on flickr, and the winner gets their photo on the front page of the flickr group. But how about once the comp is decided the winning photo gets a thread in the DDN photograph forum with a bit of info there, and made a sticky until the next competition is finished?
I'm just trying to think of ways to ensure that the photography forum gets to be interactive with the flickr group. The Flickr group is clearly a good idea as over 370 photos have been posted to it compared to far less in the photography forum (that I've seen). It's so easy and quick to use. But obviously we don't want the photo forum to lose any substance. Whilst regular members know about the flickr group, potential new members may not realise, they look at the first couple of threads and see a bit of photo chat/questions and not much more. Once your Flickr group thread drops off to the second page, they won't even know a group exists.

Definitely. I think a photo of the month topic or something like that on DDN would be a very good idea.
As far as the voting we've got a month to fine tune how we want it to work, so we can see what others think and go with the consensus.

Great idea, I used to run competitions like this on my website and they were very popular.
Just one question though, does the photo actually have to be taken during the month i.e. are we 'banning' photos from our back catalogues?
The reason I ask is that when I did this on my website I stipulated that people had to have actually taken that photo within the month in question but found that actually a lot of people simply didn't have the time or opportunity to go and take photos particularly if it was of something that they perhaps wouldn't normally shoot.
Oh and as for themes, some of the most popular themes I ran which produced some really great photos were ones based on emotions such as Joy, Despair, Love, Anger, Frustration etc
Posted 45 months ago.

I'll add those themes to the list.
The reason I suggested to have the photo taken during the month was so that it would give us a purpose to go out and photograph something new to meet the challenge, and also so that we'd all be at the same start point. However none of the format is set in stone, and I'm happy to tweak it so that we get something that encourages more participation rather than less.

I think a competition page here - can we do that? or we could post all the entries into the photography forum and run a poll in there - you can specify the time that it runs, and you can also keep the votes hidden until the poll expires which could be quite fun.
Whichever way you guys want to play it, DDN can support it.

There's a page/thread for it here: www.flickr.com/groups/ddn/discuss/72157607054590796/ maybe at the end of the month post a link up in DDN to the thread and open a poll in that for 2 weeks?
By the way, the discussion topics here can be accessed by RSS, I don't know whether or not it'd be worth feeding them into DDN too? Maybe not, I could maybe see it getting to be too much with the photo posts as well, depending on how it worked. If it could just be limited to certain ones it would be useful for linking the comp straight through to DDN that way.

And if that's the general consensus on that point it just leaves the suggestion made by Oliver to consider - how do you all want to work it:

b) to be able to use your back catalogue (if you have one)?

Agree with having to take the photo within the competition month.
Don't agree with leaving it here. I think it's important to link it back to the original community otherwise it all gets a bit... fragmented. Photography has come to be an important aspect of DDN and I think that the voting should be done there so at least the non-photographers could join in if they chose to.
I think the Flickr Bot should be shot too ;-)

From a purely personal point of view I'd say that back catalogue photos should be allowed. I often go for 2-3 months without having any free time to take 1 photo. During the working week I never have any time at all and often the weekends don't give me enough time to take specific shots that would be required for a competition. As a result, although I will try, I doubt that personally I'd be entering many competitions.
That said I do understand and agree to the sentiments behind the idea of only allowing photos shot within the month as this was the decision that I too made when I ran this on my website as I wanted to encourage people to take more photos. This did work for a time but after a few months less and less people were entering and when I asked why, I thought it was that my themes weren't inspiring people, I universally received the same answer, "I just don't have the time to take a dedicated photo each month".
I would also agree with Rutty that this DOES need to be tied into DDN. However I don't think the forum is the best place to do it, at least not in the present way it is being used. What has happened to the front end, has it gone for good?
The whole front end thing, just seemed to never get going and the forum remained a totally seperate thing which, I think, was a very bad idea. It would and is entirely possible to intergrate the forum into the 'front end' so that the front end is no longer a 'front end' but ONE site. You could then easily display latest photos from the Flickr group in modules that would be displayed either side of the forum. This way people would notice new photos but wouldn't have to click on them and it wouldn't mess up the photography forum the way the Bot does at present. In my opinion, digest or not, nobody is going to actually click on any post in the forum that it from the Flickr Bot. If they want to look at photos they will come here, if they don't then Flickr Bot is just an annoyance.

Okay, so ignoring the RSS/Flickr bot issue for now, we need to find a way of posting the competition to DDN without annoying everyone. I think the best way to achieve that would be to not automate it, but it means more work for someone to post everything over there and create a poll. As only admins (?) can create a poll there I think that means Tony ;)
A single post with every photo posted in it (with the linking code intact as Flickr requires that), in order, with the poll created and then locked so that only voting can take place and no discussion? I think it's safe to say that by taking part we agree to having someone else post our photo in the appropriate thread over there, but I'll add it in to the rules anyway.
The other issue is more difficult, I'd like ti to be a challenge to get out and take new photos, but can understand Oliver's point and appreciate that we all get busy. And I'd rather not exclude people due to time constraints. Maybe if we try it out for the first month or two and see if it can work, if not then we try to find a way to make it more flexible?

Or they could make me an admin and i'll setup the polls  :D
I think it'd be a good idea to say the photos have to be taken that month, and that'll encourage all of us to get out a bit more, put some thought into what we want to shoot etc. Rather than, with 2 days to go, rummage through our back catalogue for something that might fit!

The idea of the flickr bot (and the changes for the digest have been done and emailed to Tony) is not necessarily for existing users but potential new users browsing the forum.
As a non member, you go into the photography forum and it seems virtually dead. A couple of discussions, no real photos being posted up. By having a daily digest it allows them to go in and see the photos, click through to the flickr group and realise there's more to it than just a few conversations.
Fact is, for regular members, those who are interested in looking at other people's photos will go to Flickr, those who aren't, won't be looking in the photography forum anyway. However, the digest may be of more interest to people than looking through on flickr. I don't look through photos on Flickr, I subscribe to my contacts feed and see the photos in a feedreader, same as the digest will create.
However, that's a DDN discussion, not a competition discussion! I agree on ideally the photo being taken within the month of the comp but at the same time i can relate to lack of time, especially if you have to get out the house to take the photo with the weather we're currently having!

I've just altered rule number one. We've given restricting entries to photos taken during the current month a try and it doesn't seem to be working, with only 5 entries last month and just 2 so far this month with only 5 days left. So to encourage more entries photos taken during the 2 months prior to the start date can also be entered. Ideally entries would be in response to the challenge set, but we don't always have the time for that so I think we need to be more flexible.
So, for the October "Transport" competition photos taken from August 01 to October 31 are now acceptable, so long as they're in by midnight (GMT) on the 31st October.

I've cleared up the Monochrome thread a little but thought I'd copy this over to here, it was in response to Sam asking if he could enter 2 shots:
Although if the consensus is that we could/should allow multiple entries then I'm fine with that (especially as we only get half a dozen or fewer entries at the mo). It's probably about time for a review of the rules anyway, we can tweak anything that isn't working. If anyone has any suggestions for improving it they can go here...

I've got no problem with it. I've also got no problem with Sam's suggestion of allowing more than one entry. I think the main thing is that we try to meet the theme requirements and get entries in before the deadline. After that there needs to be flexibility to adapt rules to what will work.
I'll update them to include those for the time being; if there's any objections then we can discuss it further.
Edit: done, but I've said max 3 entries per person to save any one person being able to swamp the comp, and also changed it to shots taken over 12 months rather than 3.

A couple of changes have been made to the rules. First, rule 1 has been amended to drop back to one image per entrant. Due to the number of us now entering there's a danger that the volume can get overwhelming (there have been 14 entrants in the Water competition for example, so a potential 42 entries if we'd all used the full quota). So I think for the time being, while there's the interest, if we stick to posting out best shot for that theme it should make it more of a contest, while being easier to judge. This will come back in for competition #12 unless there are any objections.
The second change, also in rule 1, is to emphasise the 12 month time restriction. The original idea was to encourage us to get out and try to get images that met the current theme, but to recognise that we're often busy and can't always get out during a limited time span this was relaxed. However there's a danger that we're slipping into looking to our back catalogues too much, and in some cases going back further than 12 months. So from competition #12 this'll be a stricter rule.
However, something I've been thinking about in regards to both of the above is to allow more than 1 entry per member, but only 1 from the back catalogue. So if you wanted to enter 2 at least 1 must have been taken during the time that the theme has been opened for entries (eg. in the case of #11 that would be 6 weeks). What do you all think to that? Again, given the number of us entering now I think we'd still need to limit it, so maybe max 2 entries, if 1 taken while the theme is running, and just 1 otherwise.

Good points Dave, I think 1 during comp and 1 from back catalogue is an excellent idea, then as the group builds, we can bring it dow to just during the comp - that way it does what it set out to do, and anyone who can't enter the current comp, can probably enter a later comp.
I think the back catalogue entries should be gradually phased out - maybe bring them down three months at a time over the next four comps

I have no hope of getting much photography done in the very near future (other priorities!) but I do have some (older than 12 months) selective colouring images.
If we're short of entries would anyone mind if I blobbed one of those in? If there's plenty then I shall abstain from this month
Also, photo theme suggestion: abstract. I love me some of that :)

That's a tricky one Dave as I've already mentioned the rule change to someone else who withdrew their original entry (but will hopefully be entering another). I appreciate that you've got a lot going on at the moment though with Ruby about to make an appearance.
I think we maybe need to discuss the rules a bit more, so that they can help generate fresh entries whilst being fair and unrestrictive. I did try to get some input on them a month or so ago but didn't get much response other than from Tony.
If anyone has an opinion on this please share it, and why you have it, so that we can develop the format properly as I really don't want my opinion to dominate how it all works.

Looks like you have enough entries in this time - I'm happy to step back for a bit. I'd much rather do something new anyway :)

In regards to the question of 'fresh' images, I agree that this compo is a good way to motivate yourself to take new images. I've been trying to get shots purposely for the current themes but this month I've been struggling for time (and ideas) and have fallen back to an image taken in the correct time frame, but not taken with selective colour in mind.
Also, I've looked at the themes that might be used in future rounds and have a few ideas. If the chance arises I'll take the photos, but it then seems a shame not to use it if the theme comes up a month or so later.
I like seeing other peoples ideas and photos, and like competing with them even if it's an old image.
I think I'd rather lose to some great 6 month old photos, than win because too many people didn't have the time that month to enter something they were happy with.
What about using a weighted system to put older images at a slight handicap and therefore encouraging fresh images.
We have 3 votes each instead of two with points attached to each vote, and images outside of the current time frame start with a negative number of points.
Too convoluted perhaps?

That does sound maybe too convoluted, especially as we rely on votes from people who don't enter and who may not bother if it's too involved or they feel their vote isn't worth as much as others.
For last month's we allowed up to 3 images taken any time during the 12 months up to and including the comp month, but I never really looked to see whether they were or not until I realised I'd put an older one of mine in by mistake as I'd only looked at the upload date.
Anyway, that's been whittled down to the current one from 12 months and a second from during the period the comp is open. If it makes it easier to keep the entries flowing then maybe stick with that for the time being and see how we go? It gives the flexibility of 12 months to everyone, but rewards those who do something newer with a second entry?
As for theme ideas, post them and I'll add them to the list :)

That sounds like a good plan to me. :D
When I said I had ideas for themes, I meant ideas for shots for the themes on the list rather than new themes.
There's loads of good ideas for themes on that list, I can't think of anymore.
