Both. There are soo many monuments and things to see in Washington, DC that if you never visited this city you would never know they exist. Post any sight that has your interest, even if it's a favorite picture of the Lincoln memorial.

My favorite NEW place I found was the FDR memorial around midnight... it was empty and the waterfalls provided a cool breeze and surreal scene.
