I'll have to see if I can get off work! I'd love to sit in on this. This is fantastic, it's great to see such momentum taking shape. I second Erin's comments, great work to *everyone* who has been involved in moving this issue forward!

As promised, here are more details.
This is a PDF of the hearing summary, including a short intro and a list of people giving testimony.
LightboxDC promises to blog about the hearing tomorrow as well.

Oh, the drama... oh the suspense! How'd it go? Was there butt-kicking as well as rocking?! *grin*
Seriously though - so pleased that you were given an opportunity to comment, and I'm sure I'm not the only one eager to hear what was said! (Me: stuck in office with computer with no speakers... bah!)

Congresswoman Norton seriously schooled Union Station's managers today, on photography and a number of other issues. As a former longtime congressional staffer, I can assuredly state this: Erin McCann testified like a pro, and the managers had a very, very bad day:

Well that was fun! I've posted some photos of my own, and I promise to write a bit more when the adrenaline finally leaves my system.
For starters, this is my oral statement before the subcommittee.
This is the rest of the statement I submitted, which is a timeline of my involvement in the issue and some of the worst incidents.
The statement is posted on a blog I set up about six weeks ago and then promptly ignored. I promise not to do that anymore.
This is a video to the full hearing.
I went first, but you should keep watching for a bit after that. Norton continues to hammer the three men who testified after me on the issue of photo rights in Union Station. She is especially displeased at their attempts to claim it is private property.
More later.

You know what annoys me though in all this, is everything will get as short term resolve, and in the end, 6 months or a eyar later after it all blows over, we're going to be right back in the same boat. I hate to sound negative, but I've been down this road so many times shooting in DC, with security, the police, and the lawyers only to run right back in to the same wall xxxx time later.

Erin, thanks for posting the video. The hearing starts at 21:30 for those wanting to get to the actual beginning of Ms. Norton's opening statement.

I'm picking through some of the Web posts that have picked this up already, and this one is one of my favorites, mostly because it's just a 40-second clip of Norton apologizing to all of us for the insane treatment we've gotten from Union Station representatives this year.
What she says: “As a member of Congress who represents this city, I want to offer my apologies to the amateur photographers who have experienced this treatment in a facility that enjoys the patronage of the Congress of the United States through funding. And we’re having this hearing obviously not only because of your complaints but because we haven’t had a hearing on Union Station and when you leave people alone for decades, then they develop their own policies. That ceases today.”

And, finally for tonight, Washington Post has their story up.

In the FOX5 report, an interesting reason as to why so much harassment happens is because of high-turnover rates of security guards.
This is MUCH more relevant to a "security issue" than photography. Why is there a high-turnover rate? Low pay? Lack of benefits? Lack of morale? If the very people who are supposed to watch out for "real" security risks (usually fights, minor disturbances) keep on quitting, then doesn't that affect overall security?
Perhaps along with making a clear photography policy (ie, photography allowed everywhere), Jones Lang La Salle should focus on their hiring and retention practices.

Bingo, Alt. At Union Station and facilities nationwide, we have security theater, not real security. What are security paid? How are they trained? What are they missing while they are accosting a shutterbug?

It seems to me like an interesting angle for the Washington Post/local news to cover.
