DC tourist
|
Hi guys, I'm from England and I'm visiting Washington DC with my mum and nan for ten days at the end of September/early October and I'd love to know what to see and do. We want to see all of the tourist locations but what I'm looking for are more hidden gems that you think tourists should experience. I've tried to find some stuff online but none of it really goes into detail, so I'd be really grateful for your help.
Thank you so much :)

Eats is one of my favorite things to do when I travel and one of the best eats is Ollie's Trolley. They got great burgers and chips and is a mini museum. Then there is the famous landmark Ben's Chili Bowl. All over you'll find Potbelly sandwich shops if you want a quick sandwich at a cheap price. These are the top places I recommend to eat all the time.
It's kind of out of the way but the Air & Space Museum at Dulles is a home to many historical forms of travel of the subjects like the Concorde and the Blackbird are housed here as well as a NASA space shuttle. For picture taking around DC, one of the best places to shoot is the FDR Memorial. You've got a great view of landmarks from here. Aim for dawn as this is when places are it's clearest if you want a people free shot.

Take a stroll of Roosevelt Island, which sits in the middle of the Potomac River between DC and Virginia. There's a parking lot on the Virginia side of the river. From there a pedestrian bridge from there provides access to the Island (you can see it on the Google Maps link below). In the center of the island is a cool old monument to Teddy Roosevelt (different from the FDR memorial discussed above) and a walking path provides access to the perimeter of the island. The forested island provides some unique views of the city and the trees should be lovely in October.

Some of the other gems, you might want to give the old town section of Alexandria a try. It is accesible by Metro to the King Street station and a reasonable walk.
For some interesting little places try browsing through this Washingtonian article on

If you're going to be near the Vietnam memorial or the Lincoln memorial, don't miss the Einstein statue as well, just across the (very busy) street:

If you have time hit up the K Street Cemetery it's worth the walk thru. Also you must go to Arlington National Cemetery as you enter going up towards The Lee house the road forks take the left fork follow it up till you come across Field Marshall Sir John Dill Monument and grave.
Feel free to ask me any question about Arlington I'm working on a book and visit it twice aweek .
Another place to visit is the Postal Museum it's near Union Station.
