January 2008 Meetup and Photo Walk Details

view profile

epmd  Pro User  says:

Ok, So here's the lowdown.

When: Sunday January 27th 2PM Start - 4PM Photo Walk for those interested.
Where: Rocket Bar in Chinatown
714 7th Street NW WDC 20001
202 628 7665

Come one, Come All. To the January 2008 Meetup/Photo Walk.

We're gonna meet at Rocket Bar at 2 pm. Have some drinks, some banter, and I'm sure a ton of photos just inside of Rocket Bar. Then at 4PM those of us that want to head out into the wild blue yonder can head up to the streets of DC and out into the early evening light for a photo walk around that area. We can discuss the walk more once we're at Rocket Bar, or on here if you'd like. And if it's too cold out for you or you just wanna stay inside and drink and talk, that's fine we can split up. This isn't a guided photo walk. I will have no idea where I'm going and I'm sure we can break into groups, but lets discuss this on here or at the meetup.

Look forward to seeing everyone from previous meetups and seeing some new faces as well.

Are we using the buddy system for the photo walk? Do we have "safe zones" to go to in case we get lost? I NEED ANSWERS.

epmd  Pro User  says:

I would recommend the buddy system that way if you leave the "Safe Zone" they've got your back so choose your buddy carefully. And I am not keeping track of all the buddies. so if 2 of you get lost, we won't be looking for you.

gbmcinephoto you can't put your drink on that green thing but if you want to lay across it while holding your drink they don't seem to mind.

Only if you let it. It's been a long while since I met up for a photo walk, but I can tell that what I remember of it is the photo walk itself and not where we initially met up. I might have a clear calendar for this one.

epmd  Pro User  says:

The photo walk doesn't take the getting together out of it. it's a photo walk with a bunch of different people. Yes you may not get to meet everyone that was at the meetup, but that happens with a regular meetup. And we generally go out as a group for the photo walk, hence the idea of announcing the photo walk, otherwise I could just go shoot pictures on my own, and wouldn't need to announce that we were having a photo walk. With these you get to wander around the city with other photographers, talk with them while you are not taking a shot, see other peoples take on the city, what they shoot, etc. So no I don't think it takes away the get-together part of it.

And as for having it at Rocket Bar, we've had it there a couple of times now, and we are getting the most people that I've seen and I've been doing these meetups basically since I got here almost 5 years ago. We started in coffee shops but then we out grew them, have had them at restaurants, but you need reservations and it's hard to get a decisive number and picking a food style is just as tough. So we've moved onto bars.

It's pretty tough finding a place, that 20-30+ people can just converge on without any notice and have the space to accommodate everyone. Unfortunately this many times is a bar, and we've been trying to make them in the afternoons so it's less crowded.

Unfortunately this is a pretty thankless job and most certainly doesn't pay so I basically do this out of the goodness of my heart. I gave it up for awhile because at one place where we all had to have table service, I was stuck with some of the bill that someone didn't pay, it wasn't all that expensive but it was still a pain. After that another person took the reigns for awhile and realized after a few months that it was a pain in the arse and decided they didn't want to do it again. DCist Heather and I have kinda been getting it back on track and having them more frequently again.

As furcafe stated not so long ago - "We used to have semi-regular meetups but the practice broke down for the usual reason: this is a big group, everybody's busy, & it's a PITA to coordinate people's schedules (weekday v. weekend, Wed. v. Thurs., etc.) & preferred locations (DC v. NoVA v. MD) & venues (cafes v. bars v. restaurants) & a decent turnout, so nobody wants to be the "cruise director" & without a regular organizer, things tend to not get done. Note: I am not volunteering to be the cruise director."

And I have a tough time picking a place every month. I try and make it agreeable to everyone, but unfortunately you can't please everyone. And when you seem to have a place that everyone seems to like and goes to it's hard to change that place.

So I'm down for changing venues next month. It's gotta be metro accessible, big enough for a large group to descend on without notice and in the DC area. So if anyone has any ideas or wants to take the reigns for the next one, by all means.

Eric, I know first hand what a pain it is. Thanks for getting this one together.

And as I always say, if you don't like the details: don't complain about someone else's work, step up and organize it yourself. We're all just looking for someone else to do the dirty work, after all. :) And if you organize something, people are bound to breath a sigh of relief and hop on board.

epmd and Heather, thanks a bunch for all the effort you guys have put into keeping these things alive. Though my unpredicatable schedule has gotten in the way far too often, I always knew it would be impossible to please everyone. You really do need to play off the majority. I've helped with gatherings in the past (elsewhere) and know how painful it can be to try to get a bunch of people to agree on one thing. That's why I never really complain. I'm happy that my day is free that afternoon and I plan on attending, but if future events move to weeknights or different locations, too, that's fine, because I'm sure it will allow someone else to attend and I know it's just a matter of time before I make it out to the next one.

Yes, kudos to Eric & Heather for doing the meetup scutwork.

richpix?, is the problem that the meetups are in bars, the locations, or scheduling, or some combination thereof? As Eric wrote, we're open to other venues, provided that they're Metro accessible & big enough. E.g., Dremo's would be a great venue in Arlington but for the fact that they're closing/relocating this month.

epmd, I do appreciate the effort that goes into arranging these meetups, and I understand that it's not easy to find places to accommodate so many. I thank you for going to the trouble in what I realize may be a thankless task at times.

furcafe, yes, the problem is bars. I've been sober for over 13 years and have made it a policy not to hang out in places where the primary business is the distribution of alcohol. I have no desire to spend 2 hours watching other people drink and doubt that I would enjoy a walk afterwards with the people who had been drinking.

richpix, I can understand your concern. If you could have a meetup somewhere, what kinds of places would you like to see as gathering areas? Do you have any ideas we could look into for future meetups? Again, Metro accessibility and big enough spaces are major considerations, but I'm sure there must be a few good suggestions.

I've made the same request in the past for more restaurants, fewer bars, as I've got an artistically-inclined teenager who'd like to join us, too (and it seems to me that restaurants are generally more able to accommodate larger groups) but hey - I haven't got time to arrange one more group of people, so I figure I'll just catch up with y'all some other time.

That said, we might make it to the photowalk half of this one. Maybe.

And we'll DEFINITELY be at Phil Nesmith's opening tonight (1/12, 6-8pm) at Irvine Contemporary , which I imagine may turn into a mini-meetup all it's own? :)

richpix: I understand your concern and think you deserve kudos for your successful efforts... but these are people who (as far as I've ever seen) indulge responsibly. It's my opinion that it's unlikely to be a booze-fest at 2 in the afternoon, if that's what you're thinking... *smile* ... so do consider joining us at 4pm to see if you'd enjoy walking around with us or not. If it's not your cup of tea (to mix drinks...hehe) at least you'll have put faces with names, and not wonder what you're missing any longer. :)

Er hi?

I was looking for an introductions thread, but couldn't really find one. I'm a hobbiest photographer who is just starting to get really interested in the craft. I have a long background as an artist, but not really as a photographer and was looking for a new way to be creative.

Anyway, I have some basic concepts down, but really want to learn about all the technical things that are a bit beyond my grasp at the moment. So, I though I'd try to find a group of people to participate with and learn from.

So in short: Yes, I think I'll come to the meet-up and would like to meet some of you, and hopefully learn things.

Thanks.

About the nametags: Go to the Big Huge Labs page and use the badge maker to make your name tag. You can use your icon pic for the photo; as well as do a whole lot of other fun stuff. It's what I'm going to do.

Just an idea....
