The Dartmouth IGERT supports the development of an interdisciplinary graduate program in polar sciences. Dartmouth has a long tradition of northern studies dating back to the noted Arctic explorer, chsolar and founder of Dartmouth's Northern and Polar Studies Program, Vihjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962). Our unique research and training opportunities are due to Dartmouth's collaborative partnership with the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) and Greenlandic institutions and Inuit leaders. CRREL, located adjacent to Dartmouth College, is one of the premier centers of scientific expertise in polar research worldwide. Our relationship with CRREL offers students access to mentors and important new research in polar science.
