Wiener dog, hot dog, doxie, and dachshund. Some people mispronounce the word Dachshunds here in Pennsylvania. I find this funny considering the majority of people in this part of PA have German ancestory.

dachshund and teckel - which come both from German or salsicha - meaning simply sausage;
there was a TV commercial of a car suspension maker that stared a dachshund so now the people call them cofap sometimes, after the company's name.

In Japan, there's the Japanese-ified pronunciation of "dachshund" (dakkusufundo) in addition to the abbreviation noted by maruta.
I've seen Dackel in a German dictionary before. It's apparently also a slang term for something like "fool" (my memory's rather hazy, so that might not be it), which I found amusing.

I'd say "hot dog" is the most common -- and it's all the funnier when said with a Harry Caray accent (or, more accurately, with a Will-Ferrell-impression-of-Harry-Caray-accent).
As for me and my S.O. -- we call him "lil' stink" in honor of his breath ;)

In Holland Teckel or Takshond. I was in Norway some days ago, we were waiting for a ferry and then suddenly a man put his head through the car window and said: "Har du en taks?" He was very enthousiastic.
My dachshund almost bit him in the fingers, he does not like strangers :).

In Serbia they are called "jazavičar" - pronounced yazaveechar, with the first syllable stressed (in Croatia, one vowel less - jazavčar). It comes from the word "jazavac" which means badger. So basically, the same as Dachshund - badger-dog. :)

Hi. In Poland it's officially called "Jamnik" (pronounced yamnick).
We call it parówka (hot-dog), nornik (holer?), podkołdrowiec (underquilter?) :)
There are many local variations and names.
In the city that I'm living right now (Cracow), every september is great "Dachshund Parade". Last year there were over 1000 dogs ;)

"stoofbuis" I think is a Belgium (dutch) expression. Some 60 years and longer ago everbody had a "stoof" in there kitchen. It was used for cooking and heating the kitchen.. It burned wood and coal. At the end there was a small pipe to the cieling for all the fuems... And a daschhund is also small pipe like... That's why there are still called a "Stoofbuis"... It's defenitly not because the are stupid...

Here in the UK they are known mainly as sausage-dogs, but everyone recognises dachshund (altho I've seen some weird spellings!). Dachs coming from the word badger and hund meaning hound - I believe they originate as badger hunters in Germany somewhere - I think more people in the UK are also adopting Wiener and Doxie from the host of websites that are pro-dachshund in the USA - please feel free to check out my gorgeous boy George - he insists he's not any of the above - just a human being like the rest of the family!

We got ours while living in Germany where these wonderful little sweethearts were bred. They were bred for badger hunting. The German word for badger is Dachs thus the breed of Dachshund or Badgerhound. The germans refer to them as dackels for short. You can search on this word and actually find many additional sites of interest.
