Challenge #88: Selective Focus (COMPLETED)

view profile

*Bundy* is a group administrator *Bundy*  Pro User  says:

Challenge Number 88 is COMPLETED.

START DATE: August 18th
Photos submitted in this challenge must be taken and dated from the challenge start date until the deadline. This means that ANY PHOTO taken or dated prior to the start date WILL BE DELETED. No exceptions and any offending photos will be removed!

CHALLENGE #88 - Selective Focus

One photography trick that will help your subject stand out is selective focus. With this technique, we can choose one part of the image to be sharp and in focus, while the rest of the image is kept out of focus.

Using a larger aperture, say 2.8 or 5.0, can leave the background out of focus while keeping the main subject sharp and force the eye to it. Of course the distance between the subject and the background will impact what aperture you use.

For this contest show me selective focus by blurring out the background to draw more attention to the main subject.

While Macro lenses may give some people an unfair advantage in this challenge, I encourage everyone to give it a try even if they don't own a macro lens....like me. :-)

Any new photo where Selective Focus is achieved is welcome. The subject and the post processing is entirely up to the individual.

Here are two examples of what we're looking for:

Ten Little Piggies Untitled

I think the challenge is fairly straight forward but if you require any clarification, send me a message.

Submit your best new photo that falls under this challenge.

Deadline for Submissions - September 2, 2009 12:00am GMT (September 1st 7:00pm EST)

- You can enter one photo in the contest.
- Please post the medium version of your photo.
- The photo must be taken with a D80 only.
- Your submission must be taken by you. Do not enter another photographers work.
- Your EXIF data on your photo must be available for viewing or the photo will be disqualified and deleted from the challenge without warning. If it is not available you may contact an Admin to provide details or get permission to submit it. All others will be removed...no questions asked.

Once you've entered the contest you may replace your entry with another if you feel it's better provided the deadline hasn't passed and it remains within the rules of the group.

You must vote once in the challenge after it is closed and NOT for your own submission no matter how worthy it may be. :-)
Also at the time of voting you are encouraged to leave comments on any photos you like or any constructive criticism is also welcome as long as it is done in a friendly manner.

Admin Note: This appears to be another photo that is showing up with the wrong date (2008) but I believe it was taken this year. Everyone please remember to make sure your internal date is correct in your cameras before submitting photos. Thanks - Bundy

Another challenge with plenty of great submissions.

To those of you who resisted the temptation of using a macro lens in this challenge, well done. I know it's not easy to resist that urge.

This was a really tough choice...
#4 is great because I feel like I'm the one playing that hand, trying to be secretive and keep a straight face.
#17 really shows a connection between the subject and the background. And the colors are so pretty.
