But the D70s is number 12 the D70 is number 1. We know that they are pretty much same camera but the D70 folks can technically claim that one. :-)

The D70 has been out longer, so more people have them and are using them.

As a D70s owner I extend a congradulations to the D70 owners. If it wasn't for the D70 I would not be a D70s owner.

I was just about to say I'm old skool, but spincycle kinda beat me to it!

But seriously, that list is in a dire state... probably more than 2/3 of that is all Canon! The enemy has the upper hand! We must strike back!

Canon is a monster company... I'm not surprised they dominate in shear numbers.

I think it's hard to deny the bang for the buck for the D70/s though and it really holds it own very well against other manufacturers and cameras that cost much more.

The reason Canon is #1 Manf. is they make more/better point and shoots. Every Nikon DSLR owner I know owns a Canon P&S. I have a PowerShot S400. It's a great little camera.

I would agree with Tracer99 and admit that this D70 owner owns a Canon PowerShot A75, too. I've tried the Nikon Coolpix and other P&S and they don't hold a candle to Canon's products in that category.

Hahahaha spincycle, I appreciate the irony of calling any dSLR old skool. Of course I'm looking at my Kodak Brownie right now.

And yup, I own a Powershot S45. It was dirt cheap, shoots RAW, and takes CF cards -- a dSLR shooter's friend. Of course Canon screwed that up with the S80.

I also own a Canon: S2 IS. It's only wife proof in auto mode though ;)

The Canon Digital Rebel XT (3rd) and Canon EOS 350D (7th) are the same camera - I wonder what that would do to the table if those entries were added together (and D70 + D70s for that matter).

Which is the default for EXIF? Show or hide? What proportion of people make sure to hide theirs? Is that proportion significantly different among DSLR users compared with point-and-shoot users?

I can't help thinking the proliferation of very similar models with different names (plus the variation in the name under which the specific model is recorded, as Steve notes) make this list look oddly weighted. It's just never looked useful to me, basically - if anything, it just makes me more curious what the real splits are.

And, oh, "wife-proof." That's hilarious.

Computer Science Geek  Pro User  says:

Flickr's default is to show the EXIF data. The only reason it may be missing is because of the software application may have stripped it out. In most cases, straight from the camera uploads will leave the EXIF intact.

why do people purposefully hide exif data?

boodoo  Pro User  says:

Some people use "Save for Web..." in Photoshop, and I'm pretty sure that strips EXIF. Purposefully hiding it...well I don't see the need for it, but some people don't like giving away information that may not be shown in Flickr's EXIF viewer (Date/Time, shutter count, etc.)

There are plenty of good reasons to be paranoid!

"The only reason it may be missing ...."

... or the user has elected to hide it, of course. This definitely happens regularly. It would be interesting to know the proportion - I'd love it if Flickr staff could give a good estimate. It might be surprising.

Edit: I hide my EXIF data, and really it's because I just plain don't want to display it. I definitely use EXIF data myself, and I admit I like looking at other people's EXIF data, but I guess I just like to maintain a little mystery.

So interesting to know that a lot of you have Canon point & shoot cameras also. I have a Canon A80 and I like how it uses the same CF cards that my D70 uses. It's nice to have around when I don't want to lug the D70. I agree that Nikon point and shoots are not as good as Canon, though I'd never buy a DSLR that wasn't a Nikon.

And I can attest that if you use the "Save for Web" function in PhotoShop that it does indeed strip out the EXIF. I used to save all my files for flickr that way, but quit doing it since I am nosy and like to know what cameras people are using and want people to know what I shoot too. :)

I'm just surpised that sony ranks so low. It's essentially all sony cameras lumped into one. I thought sony was the number one seller of cameras back 3 years ago, number 2 last year, and number 3 this year. My memory (and numbers) are probably wrong, but at least top 5 three years running. So all those cameras combined should = #1 ranking. Right? wrong? thread derail?

fd  Pro User  says:

The list is generated from regularly sampling EXIF data in recent uploads. So it isn't based on ownership -- it's based on usage. Cameras get to the top of the list by uploading the most photos.

My gut says DSLR owners shoot more pictures than point and shoot owners. That combined with the high ratio of P&S models to DSLR models (which fractures the P&S market so that no single camera can dominate) is the reason so many DSLRs dominate the list.

Sony is weird. For some reason they didn't include the model number in their EXIF -- just Cybershot.

I've thought of combining all the EOS Rebel models: the 350D (Europe) and XT (USA) and Kiss n Digital (Japan). But I sort of like that you can compare how much the Rebel is used in those respective markets. Similar reasons for the D70/D70s -- they really are different cameras.

Oh, and I have a Canon S50 P&S.

:-)

Ryan Brenizer  Pro User  says:

In general it does seem that the more expensive a camera you have, the more you try to justify it by posting tons and tons of photos (or you got the camera because you're such a photo-nut). The numbers at Pbase, being a bit more clear, show this really well. 716 Coolpix 3200 users have posted 13,775 images, or 19.2 images per person, but 886 D2X users have posted 108,343 images, or 122.3 images per person.

Incidentally, is Pbase is more of a grand conspiracy to show us that every single camera model is capable of taking bad pictures, or something to remind us of our financial shortcomings by showing people taking photos of 12-year-olds' soccer games with an $11,000 camera/lens combo? ;-)

Looks like I'm the only one who has a Pentax P&S!

And virtually all of us here are photo-nuts, I'm quite certain of that...

When people realize that the price of my flash (SB-800) is equivalent to a very nice digital P&S camera, they think I'm pretty nuts.
P.s. Don't tell them I got it for $368 CAD =D

I'm not sure why I hide exif. It shows it half the time, and hides it the other half. For no particular reason. I personally think it's funny that people think they're protecting their art by hiding exif. In most art forms the process protects itself because it's so difficult, so there's no need to protect it (you take the chisle, you take that massive block of granite, keep chipping until it looks like a man and women necking under a tree etc). In photography it's, "huh, when I put the apeture at F8 and the shutter went automatically to 1/60th of a second." Don't see much of a reason to hide that.

I used to have an OptioS before it was stolen.

Also, Casio’s Exilim Z series cameras have Pentax OptioS series optics and sliding lens design in them, so those should count as Pentax P&S’s IMO.

Real old school here.My 1st digital was and is my D70. I used my F2A for over thirty years (and an FM), never getting around to even picking up an autofocus SLR. I felt I couldn't hold out any longer on getting into the 'digital world' and thought it was just natural that I continue with Nikon. The best thing I've ever done for my photography, but my trusty F2A remains as my back up. Needless to say, I have a lot to learn in the digital/computer world.
