ahh .. I use it a lot .. but I use a real white paper to make the setting ..
even with flash this works very well.
don't overexpose!! then you will get a [no good] message.
cheers, Nils A.

I've never heard of the Pringles lid... but I have heard of folks going to local hardware stores to get the paint sample cards and using them for WB settings.

I've tried the pringles lid t no avail. Actually I've tried several things with custom white balance, none of which worked. I must be doing something wrong. Can someone explain in detail how they get best results with custom white balance?

ahh .. well turn to [pre] in the whitebalance settingmenu .. then let go the whitebalance button and pres it again .. [pre] flickrs .. make a picture with only white, like a white paper, full frame .. even out of focus, and you'll get a message [good] or [no good] .. when it's [no good] most of the time it's over exposed. you can make the white balance also with a graycard. be sure you have the paper in the light you will use for the picture!!

I use a Pringles lid all the time; follow Nils' intructions, but hold the lid over the lens while releasing the shutter...I can only find the transparent lids around here now, so I'm very protective of the one I have...

My plan is now to track down OMB and steal his, since apparently our area no longer has any others in circulation.

I read that some bubble wraps folded and sandwiched between two clear Pringles lids work just as well, or even better :^)

I just have a small piece of what paper in my camera bag. That's useful. Sometimes I like to play with WB though. Try using something like...red, and define that as white.

Check out tennis ball cans if Pringles' lids aren't available. I haven't used this method, but I know some of the big-box sports retailers have rows of tennis ball cans with lids of all colors. (Plus, staying away from those Pringles will help with the waist line. ;-) )

Many scuba people use the small white erase boards for underwater photography. White Balance is very, very necessary there otherwise everything photographs blue. The small erase boards work great!
