Wow, those are nice. I'm probably going to pick one of those up in the next few months.

You sure there were no filters on there. Those green spots on the first two pictures sure look like filter flare. If not, it's a bit disconcerting that you'd get that sort of flare from the lens itself.
There's the usual fringing around highlights but that's understandable. Shooting at f/1.8 with that amount of contrast, it's hard to ask for much better.
The images themselves appear very crisp, though. A good impression overall.

No filters. Soon enough we will get to take a look at more samples from other copies, as well. I am waiting to find out whether this "feature" appears commonly or not.

Any chance for some day time shots? Shooting at angles toward the sun would really see the flare.
Pretty sweet you got your hands on a copy!

If you have ordered through warehouse express it could be a while, as it took them ages to get the 50mm af-s and even then it was in very limited numbers.
If I was you, juts keep an eye out pretty much everywhere and get it from the first place you see it!!

The lens looks really nice and all. The picture quality is great too.
And the D40/x looks so cute with that lens on!

Interesting. I've seen something similar from my 35mm f/1.4 AIS:

However, that was shot under the most extreme flare/ghosting-inducing circumstances.
Very different from the ghosting produced by the 35mm f/2 O:

looks pretty nice. i am really happy with my sigma 30f/1.4, its a great focal range on a DX body, so i imagine this will yield similar results. a great range for indoor shooting

The look of the flare is definitely unusual. Did you have to work at it to make it flare or did it do so easily?

I tried to obtain the worst of the situation, yes. I couldn't obtain a normal flare effect, only this distortion...

Cone of Cold Those photos are so misleading... it's a crop! At first I thought the flare actually filled up that much of the frame.

David, yeah, I forgot to mention that... I was more interested in the unusual shape and rainbow-like colour of the flare... It doesn't look like the usual deal.

If you're using it indoor, lens flare from the sun probably won't be an issue.
Shoot with the lens hood on.

Different countries get them at different times.
I think all the sample images I've seen so far are from Easterm Europe.
I've heard rumors that the USA will get this lens in a couple of weeks.

I don't see myself being excited by the 35mm on DX.
The focal length just isn't exciting to me. When I see the photos, I feel: "OK, now where's the rest of the picture?"
I'm used to using the 18mm end of my kit lens, and zooming out near to the max of my 55-200mm. I like the extreme ends of my lenses, for the dramatic effect it adds to the pictures.
Plus, I checked out the 35mm focal length on my 18-55mm VR. It's very unflattering, and is maxed out at f5.3 already. So far, I don't enjoy it.
STILL, I DO often push to ISO 3200, 'cuz I need it quite often. Maybe this'll really help. It DOES have such nice bokeh!

Hm, well in buying primes, the point really isn't to be excited by the length. Its everything else, the speed, the optical quality, etc.
I think shooting primes will also help you think more about your composition, and move around more to obtain that perfect shot!
I'm still waiting for my 35mm to come!! should be SOON

† Aquila † : Not sure about that. The reason so many people are excited about the 35mm is precisely because of its length. The 50mm was too long for general use and the 35mm is much more versatile.
I can understand if this particular focal length doesn't interest -Niloy-. Thom Hogan feels the same way and mentions frequently on his site that he prefers wide angle and telephoto lengths to the more standard lengths. It's more a statement of personal preference than it is the usefulness of a particular type of lens. I personally like a more normal field of view because I feel that it shows the subject more plainly, allowing it to be the focus of a picture instead of a particular perspective being the focus of the picture. It's just a matter of preference.

On a side note, there is quite an interesting article on "normal" focal lengths here: theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer...
Has anyone tested the 35/1.8 against sigma's 30/1.4?
