About Curb Magazine: 'Rural Futures' Image Contest
Deadline for entry is July 31, 2011

We invite you to submit original images for CURB Magazine. This university-community publication explores the city-region landscape, covering diverse issues such as governance, public spaces, design/architecture, infrastructure and sustainability. For the ‘Rural Futures’ issue of Curb, we welcome rural photos that address the themes in the call for photos/articles below.

Prizes and Image Specs
If your image is chosen for the cover you will receive a $300 honorarium and 5 copies of the magazine. You will receive 2 copies of Curb if your image is published in the inside pages of the magazine. We are looking for striking photos, illustrations or other artwork. Images will be chosen based on their Originality and Composition

Technical suggestion for cover image submissions:
- 300 dpi or higher
- RAW format images preferred
- Portrait orientation is preferred for cover image submissions

As images may be published, photographers submitting images with people in them are required to obtain publication permission from their subjects.

Rural Futures Themes
What are the opportunities and challenges for rural areas and towns? Their amenities, natural resources, lifestyles, and recreation possibilities are in high demand. Cultural ideals are promoted in rural areas and act as a foundation to draw new people and ideas to these areas. However, there are also many challenges: economic activities can be limited, distances challenging, and ecosystems blighted by resource extraction.

How can such dilemmas be reframed? Is it a matter of providing infrastructure, structuring governments, increasing services, or developing sustainable practices? Are there new approaches to reframing the rural?

Other rural themes to be addressed in this issue can include:
•Business retention and expansion
•Rural emergency services
•Arts and culture
•Agriculture and sustainability
•Resource based economies
•Rural health care
