Suggestions for Future Meetups

I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread for suggestions for meetups. I'd really like to find a good spot in CT for fall foliage pictures. Years ago I lived in Eastern CT and there were some beautiful spots up around Putnam. Let's get some good ideas!!!!!

Foliage - don't know of any special spots...

Here are some others I can recommend though:
Elizabeth Park - Flowers!, trees, ducks/geese, landscape
Harkness Park - Architecture, flowers, birds, landscape
Mystic Aquarium - Fish!, Penguins, aviary
Hubbard Park/Castle Craig - scenery (highest point within 25 miles of US east coast), ducks/geese

For Fall Foliage, Tanager girl, Violet Ink and I, Footshaman (we are all friends) would Like to suggest a fall capture festival, down New Haven way. There is beautiful foliage at East Rock Park (Hamden/ New Haven) Edgewood Park(New Haven) West Rock State Park (Hamden/ New Haven)or Sleeping giant Park(HDN/NH) and Edgerton Park (HDN/Nh) all of these places are within minutes of one another. and are HUGE.
for Birding, East Rock park Has an National Audubon Society designation as an important bird area, and Lighthouse Point Park is an excellent place to see migrant birds in the fall.

Check out ctwaterfalls.com. There are many nice falls in the state. They may be a nice back drop for fall foliage as you can get great reflections in the pools and streams around the falls. The photos on the website leave a bit to be desired but you may find a beautiful spot around the corner you did not know existed!

I live in the northeast corner and there's an Audubon Center and Sanctuary in Pomfret. There are often migratory walks on the weekends, if you want a leader. If not, the Bafflin Sanctuary is open to the public anytime. The whole "quiet corner" of the state is full of photo ops, but difficult for some to get to.

You can't go wrong by going to Mt. Carmel aka Sleeping Giant State Park. I live in Maine but would be very interested in meeting up, just need a bit of a warning so I can plan my trip down and get the time off from work. I visit Southington often and would find a Saturday afternoon best for me, although a hike on a Sunday would also interest my partner. Wadsworth Falls in Middlefield would be nice as well if I remember correctly.

UCONN!!!

It is still an agricultural school with some nice old buildings, a dairy bar that makes its own ice cream, and a few decent places to eat. In addition there is the Gurleyville grist Mill www.joshuaslandtrust.org/gristmill.html

All the Joshua's Tract preserves www.joshuaslandtrust.org/propertylistname.html

Nipmuck Forest and Bigelow Hollow State Park look interesting.

And the Bafflin Sanctuary, which has already been mentioned, was once a working dairy farm. www.ctaudubon.org/visit/pomfret.htm

I might suggest that we start off at the Pomfret Audubon Center and work our way out from there, possibly heading up to Union or the West Thompson Lake www.nae.usace.army.mil/recreati/wtl/wtlhome.htm

It's all starting to come back now. What I really need to do is down about a 6 pack of Grape Crush and drive around that part of the state 9don't ask).

Anyone know anything about Mansfield Hollow State Park? I have a map of CT in front of me and it looks intriguing.

Here's a list of CT pumpkin farms: www.pumpkinpatchesandmore.org/CTpumpkins.php

This one sounds interesting, though they don't list a website and I can't tell if maybe it's a tiny stand on the side of the road, or what. Anyone been here?

In a different vein, I like looking around old industrial areas. There are beautiful places in Bridgeport that I've been to but I was always by myself and didn't feel brave (or reckless) enough to get too far off the road. Bridgeport also has an old downtown area that is starting to come back but there are still some nice old bldgs and signs, plus there's a waterfront area and restaurants. I don't know my way around there very well, but maybe someone else here does or maybe online. I'd be up for other industrial area as well. But foliage is good too.

If you do Mansfield State Park and there's not enough to hold everyone for too long, you can head to Goodwin State Forest in Hampton. It's not too far up Rt. 6. As we head into the colder months, please post any suggestions for cold weather shoots.

Earlier this year, we had suggestions for Mystic Aquarium and the Peabody Museum at Yale. I have contacted both places with some questions about photo policies. Based on their websites, Mystic should be OK. Peabody is a little more questionable and makes it sound like some parts are off-limits.

Both indoor and outdoor suggestions are welcome. Let's try to stay away from long periods of time in the cold. Short exposures to cold with hot chocolate afterwards would be okay, especially if combined with an indoor shoot!

Maybe Mystic Seaport Museum (not the Aquarium) in the winter? I think the Charles Morgan whaling vessel is undergoing repairs, but there are some other tall ships there too that might lend themselves to some nice shots. The bigger interest might be in several old buildings and displays in the 19th century whaling village that might offer some good photo opps even in the winter months. Hopefully one of those buildings is a blacksmith shop, or at least has a big working fireplace for a little warmth!

For lunch we'd have to stop at Mystic Pizza for "a little slice of heaven." Chased down with a large pitcher of heaven....

For the afternoon, there are the old stand-bys, the Aquarium or Old Mystic Village (shopping village). Or we can come up with a short list of other smaller attractions in the area (historic homes, a lighthouse, etc). With so many choices in the immediate area, people will likely have different preferences. So maybe we could start with the usual structure in the AM (i.e., everyone shoots at the Seaport) and then offer a "Shooter's Choice" approach for the afternoon. This would allow individuals (or smaller groups) to shoot what interests them the most, and get the best "return" on their drive time investment. It might also add a little variety to the photo pool. And it would still allow us to bond together as a group in the AM and over lunch. Just a thought....

Hmm, interesting suggestion of the seaport. I have actually been in touch with Mystic Aquarium about their photography policy for a winter shoot.

When I tried to photograph Mystic Seaport last summer, I thought it would be full of opportunity, but really had a hard time finding shots. My photography has changed a lot in that time though, so I'd be very interested in others' experiences with photographing the seaport.

I do like the "Shooter's Choice" idea, and am sure we would have no problems coming up with plenty of ideas for the Mystic area.

Sharon, I work in Mystic now - at the Aquarium - so can help with this. I just started today and already found out there's a sort of Mystic pass so you can get into the Seaport and the Aquarium. There's a very cool Birds of the Outback exhibit at the Aquarium, in for the summer. 500 birds (parakeets, cockatiels & rosy-cheeked something or others) in a bird cage with room for us and 200 of our best friends. It is hard to photograph, but a lot of fun. I do know going in the evenings, before school gets out, makes it easier to photograph the critters as there are less people to get in the way. here are a few images i took.... flickr.com/photos/7765489@N06/sets/72157603986505755/

There's also some noise about a Mystic Thursdays - will find out more about that.

Other options: Stonington Vineyards, Ct College Arboretum (in New London), the 51st Mystic Outdoor Art Festival is Aug 8-10... that sounds very promising!

Randy, sounds great! Unfortunately, June 14th is the only day I can definitely commit to our Elizabeth Park shoot. Let me know if a group winds up going and we'll work something out for the Elizabeth Park meetup.

There's a hot air balloon festival in Plainville which was a very interesting shoot last year! Challenging, for sure, as the lighting is constantly changing as the sun rises! Their site is down at the moment, but a ballooning site says it will run from August 22 - 24 this year. I'm definitely dragging myself out of bed at 4:30 again because the shots were worth it! I will definitely post more info as it gets closer.

Cheryl, I had talked with someone from Mystic Aquarium who was quite helpful and welcoming. We wound up going with the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk instead as our first group aquarium shoot. That was just a few months ago. But I would definitely like to revisit the possibility and will keep you in mind as a point-person for that meetup! This may be a good shoot for November -- before it gets too cold, but the scenery will be kind of blah for outdoor nature shoots.

Anyway, I will be traveling route 6 all through CT. and Rhode Island because I am beginning a new project. Hope to have more photos and more info as I travel the route.

Just another possibility. We could go to the general area of Mohegan Sun. Some have already taken in Yantic Falls, but there is also Fort Shantok State Park in Norwich where the Mohegan ran their powwow in June. It is the burial place of Chief Uncas. It is right along the CT River and there are trails and whatnot. It is also very close to the quarry that the story about the Mohegan Stonecutter Ghost came from. There is also Mohegan Sun itself. I am not sure if the Tantaquidgeon Museum is still open, but that had wonderful native artifacts in the museum, and the grounds were interesting. There is also the Mohegan Church right next to the museum, and some other historical areas nearby. I would be willing to lead this trip. I think that photographically, it is very good.

I've already got several spots in mind and different from the last time! We should also keep in mind the sunflower festival in late summer at Buttonwood Farm in Lisbon/Griswold (SE along the RI border) - June and I did it together last year (then others followed) and it was amazing. There's a great state forest, Patchaug, close by with some great photo ops, too.

Lymans is a big place. I think they can handle it. Besides, I need apples. Apple butter is on the agenda for canning this season. I hope Sharon goes for it and sees it as a nice meetup place. Wadsworth Falls should be at its best in October, and there are trails and the little falls there as well.

Idea....

The Portland Fair is going on October 9-11. Maybe Lyman Orchards, then pass by Wadsworth (which wouldn't be a long shoot anyway,) and then cross through Middletown (a few miles from Wadsworth) and cross the bridge to the Portland and do the fair for the afternoon. There are restaurants in Middetown. It's all pretty close.

Or Lyman all morning, have lunch, then do Wadsworth and the fair in the afternoon. ... "stay as long as you want."

Has anyone attended the Portland Fair? How is it? The Berlin Fair is Oct. 2-4.

The fall fairs are really nice. www.ctfairs.org for a list of ALL of them across the state.

Lyman Orchards was suggested last year as well. Mike and I were at Lyman one weekend in October a few years ago without our cameras. Parking was difficult. People were packed in like sardines and it was nearly impossible to even walk through the store. I remember being bumped by other people almost the entire time I was in the store, and the grounds were also quite busy. While I know there is interest, I think this is one of those locations which would be better to visit individually or in smaller groups. A group meetup could draw about 25 photographers, which I think would be challenging to us, other visitors, and the staff.

With 370 members, our meetups are starting to draw more members. This has its pros and cons. Planning is becoming more difficult, as we have to make sure there is enough parking, etc, for 25 or more. There is ample parking at the main entrance for Wadsworth but the main attraction, the "Big Falls" has a rather small lot. During foliage season, there is a good chance there would not be enough parking. The hike to the big falls from the main lot is long and, as I recall, there was not much to shoot along the way.

Ideally, I'd like to see something in the Essex/Haddam area. We do a very good job of covering the state, but we have neglected this area since July 2007!

Essex Steam Train - Just a thought to remember, you'll be on a moving train. It stops for the riverboat. It is hard to see what is coming, for focusing. There are a few clear areas along the way. I went Oct. 23, 2008, colors were not strong.
Around the train station - are trains,a parking lot & a few trees.
I have not been on the Riverboat. It gets closer to shore, from what I see in the photos I took.
Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center - (abt. $5.- adults) Mystic

if this is the same place I went years ago with my sons it is very nice. Lots of trees, water, birds.
Stonington Point - out by the Lighthouse Museum,

has limited parking but in the fall might work, for an additional something to if we are in the area. Nice old homes, looking out on the water.

Also in late September Mystic Seaport has an antique car show. They have to be pre-1930 and they set them up in front of the buildings. I got some really nice pictures during this event.

I was just up at UConn the other day and took way too many photos! I fell in love with the Jorgenson Barn.
There are also great cemeteries in the area and of course the Dairy bar for fine dining...on ice cream.
I also like the industrial/abandoned area ideas. Maybe for the more stalwart.
I'm thinking I can make it to the Cedar Hill meet-up!

Just wanted to mention for the future that Buell Farms out in Eastford has an apple festival every Columbus Day weekend. Just went today. They have hay rides, pumpkin picking, apple picking, chicken barbeque, music, lots of wonderful things to eat and buy (they give out free apple cider with a homemade doughnut) and it is very close to Yale Forest. The colors through the forest were amazing. They will have one more day of festivities on Monday. Not on Sunday. There are great cemeteries in the area and some very nice churches as well. If you go on Monday, make sure you go through Yale Forest. It is positively breathtaking.

To get there you can take rt. 44 up to rt. 89. Take a left on to rt. 89 and when you get to the stop take a right. This takes you through Yale Forest and past Westford Cemetery. At the end of the road (it is very narrow and trail like) take a right and up about 1/2 mile is the right onto Crystal Pond Rd. Follow for about 2 miles and you will bump into the festival. Pictures are coming soon if you want to check it out.

It might because I go all the time, but the aquarium can get boring for photos.
