About The Crown of the Continent
This group contains pictures from the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem in northwest Montana, southwest Alberta and southeast British Columbia.
This is the only place in the world that has an International Peace Park (Glacier National Park and Waterton National Park), multiple State and Provincial Parks, multiple designated Wilderness Areas, is a World Heritage Site and and a Biosphere Reserve.
The total area of The Crown is over 20,000 square miles, that is more than three times the size of Connecticut. Only three major roads cross the continental divide on it's windy 400 mile journey through the Crown of the Continent.
The Crown has the highest density population of non-coastal grizzly bears. It is the home of the greatest range of carnivores in North America. The Flathead River Valley holds the most diverse range of vascular plants in Canada.
It is the headwaters of three different river systems originating in three different oceans. It is a melting pot for bio-diversity. Maritime species common to the Pacific northwest mix with organisms commonly found on the Great Plains. Fauna and flora from the southern Rocky Mountains merge here with the species more common in the Canadian Rockies. It is a one of a kind place.
