About Creating SakakaweaOur perceptions of Sakakawea, correct or incorrect, are informed by the many ways she’s been portrayed in the past. She has been popularized in books, statues, and cinema, most recently by Mizuo Peck in Night at the Museum and its sequel. She’s been memorialized by having a river, a lake, numerous mountain peaks, and two US Navy vessels named in her honor. Two American postage stamps bear her image, as well as a United States dollar coin. She has been used in advertising to represent everything from commercial dye to an insurance company and even the State Historical Society of North Dakota. |
