Demonstrations in Madison

Democracy in action is taking place in the hallowed halls of the Capitol building. Thousands of protestors are letting the politicians know what they think of the new budget that Governor Scott Walker and the Republicans are proposing. I took the day off work yesterday (Friday) to see for myself what was happening and to see how people respond in a rather volatile atmosphere. I can say that the police, capitol security and sherriffs did a great job of remaining in the background and were very polite and courteous. The protestors, mostly teachers, students, public service employees and the assorted private sector union members were on their good behavior, energetic and passionate but very civil. I walked around for a few hours as a neutral observer and documentor of the event and am hoping that the protests scheduled for today are just as peaceful.

Thanks Tim for the update. So far very energetic and civil as the whole country watches this unfold. Today the Tea Party makes their appearance as they communicate their viewpoint as well. I am hoping that civility can still be maintained with this added dynamic amid all the passion.

Tea Party came and everything remained civilized. I got there around 3 or 4 (late, I know) and there were maybe 40 Tea Partiers left. Though, I heard there were more (like 5-7 to 1), but I guess they had to get back to the home before dark or something.

Highlight:
The sight inside the capitol building chock full of drumming, bagpiping, chanting protesters was amazing. They were very passionate, but peaceful. I was seriously proud to be a Wisconsinite.

I was there on Friday. Going back on Tuesday, hopefully. I am such a geek for democracy in action.

The thing I really like about people that love photography as much as I do is that I can disagree with them politically but still like them no matter what. What we witnessed and documemented with our cameras is going to be important, no matter which side we are on. The stuff going on here is going to have repurcussions on a national scale. I am glad I took the day off of work to see it with my own eyes.

Jim Wend here. I went down on Friday also. I was interested in the process and the number of protesters who brought kids to see, in the words of some, what democracy looks like. (I'm mad about the damn train also!)
