hmmm...i don't know where to start since craft group forum usually filled with fun and happiness...

but really, i'm kind of drowning when i saw this...

i'm a little bit disappointed that when i see the top contributors' pictures, some of them just upload their japanese book/magazine pictures...no wonder that they are top contributors...if it's just books or magazines, i also have a lot...but to inspire and encourage me personally to craft in japanese style...ah, not... it's not really inspiring though...i got encourage more when i see someone's crafts that he/she make it with care and love...

i thought that this groups: crafting in japanese is more than just showing the japanese crafting books/magazines..it's we ourselves crafting in japanese style, using japanese books, or such...but we shows our craft here...not just the books...
now i'm confused, what group is this crafting in japanese for? the craft itself or the books? it's fine if the books can be included but if they just dominate this group...mmmmmm....nnnggggg...weird...i thought it's a "craft made by a crafter" group that matters...

well, may be i hoped too much...but i'll keep posting my craft here because i see that a lot of people do their craft and post the pictures here...

ah, starting my morning like this...really-really not good...

I enjoy looking at the book images. At least I know what I'm looking at. What is annoying is people posting pictures of their creations and not acknowledging the source of the patterns and/or inspiration. Not only is this unfair on the author of the book from which these patterns come from it is also impossible for the viewer to assess which books are worth getting. If it's an original design it needs to be captioned too. More captions please!!

I also appreciate the books and mooks upload , keep them coming please :-)
I myself just started collecting mooks and most of them I got after checking in this group , mostly the ones that show a page or two of the book! I don't know how are the prices for you all but for me it's not like I can buy a mook every month so any help on choosing is really appreciated and a picture does speak more than words :-)

but I totally understand your frustration sweetnichan . I guess it depends on what you expect when visiting a group.
My expectation of this group is to get inspiration for trying new things on the "japanese craft world", and if with somethings a mook is enough, for others is of great inspiration to see that some of the things I thought were "impossible" to do from the mooks, some of you actually have made it :-)

so please keep uploading your crafts , it is also of great inspiration to others :-)

I also enjoy seeing images from books people have. I try to write where I got my patterns from but some of the titles are in Japanese and I simply don't know what to call the book. Some things I've even made from book images found on flickr. Anyway I just worked out how to upload the photos which is why I have posted so many today. Please feel free to ask any questions about patterns and I will try to be more specific.

Hi! I'm a new member. I am a fan of hand quilting. I make little purses according to patterns I find in Japanese patchwork magazines and books.
I have lots of Japanese patchwork mags and books. I can easily read Japanese characters-kanjis- so if you need help, I can.
Where do you guys buy your Japanese patterns books? I have my Japanese friends send me and also Amazon.co.jp is a good source.
Lastly, what is "mook"?

Well, auctally, the group title n description does give the impression that this is agroup more for sharing of Jap craft book n probably getting help from Japanese crafters for interpretation of the words. That was why I hesitated to post photos here.

Btw, craft books are avaliable at Kinokuniya at probably the same or cheaper rate if you are a member. I got 3 from Yesasia n they took more than a month to send to me. Meanwhile, I discovered that they are sold at the same or cheaper prices at the store mentioned. I bought 2 of the books wrongly. One is on needle felting but I do hand sewn felt. The other one is on hand sewn fel cloth animal plushies but they are not exactly my style. I bought them thinking i could use the general body shape, especially for spherical or round shape. I realised that the templates are not really actual size as the etsy seller claimed on the same book title. Frankly speaking, I have prob understanding the instructions cos they are in Japanese. Maybe I will try to spend more time to figure them out when i am free. I didn't want to try too complex stuffs so that more time is spent on trying to piece the parts together n creativity lost. Some of them look simple but piecing diff parts together can be time-consuming but it may be something that craft buyers won't notice because they look deceivingly simple as many of these could be found in commercialised felt products.

I've loved every Japanese book i have bought but did a lot of research first using images from flickr and blogs to gain an idea which books interested me. Then I discovered some japanese craft book sellers on ebay who are very very generous with the images they include from each book. This way you mostlikely will not make a mistake. Two sellers i found had a good selection are pompadour24 (mentioned previously) and Sew crafty. The latter charges postage fees. You could even browse their pages and if prefer buy elsewhere. I also have difficulty understanding the patterns but am hopeful I will work it out if not will be asking for help

i don't mind watching the pictures from the japanese books since they are cute indeed...but i wish there are more than just book's picture, you know...please, include the handmade......just thought, too much book's pictures, it's like they are trying to "sell" something...it makes me confused, is this selling and buying forum or crafting...or both?
i like the title of this forum but i think i'm a little bit misunderstanding about this forum...
well, just thought we post everything we made here, not just pictures...i just thought, what's the use of the books when i make none or get no knowledge from them...i think, i prefer to share the result rather than the book...or at least not just the book...for me, seeing a person's craft result, sourced from japanese books are more interesting and encouraging...if i'm interested to make the same thing, i'll ask the book's isbn of course...

and, yes, of course...i would be very proud of my self when i can design and make things myself...so of course, i'll announce it that it's my design and i made it myself...(^.^)...

i think i need some opinion about posting book's pictures because i'm very carefully when i want to post the book's pictures...wondering if it will violate the copyright...sometimes, i want to upload the books i use as reference...compare my result and their result...but i think again about the copyright...hmmmm...unless i want to sell my books...but, i'm really opened when people want to know the references i used for my crafts...i think for some craft, if the pictures are clear, they can be copied without looking the making techniques...and because of this, i'm very careful...eventhough they may not sue me (^.^)...of course, unless i want to sell them, but i don't think i would post them here...i remember,i read somewhere, that flickr is not for that...

anyway, in my former blog, i usually mentioned the ISBN but then i'm lazy to write it anymore...too many crafts upload, too many books...it's just full already on my small computer desk, so i just passed the isbn (^.^)...but if anyone wants to know, they can send me a message for isbn...then they can look up themselves in amazon.co.jp or global.yesasia.com...

right now, i'm trying to "compete" with japanese craft artist...because i just don't want to follow the books...the books are teaching me the techniques and inspiring me about how to use, combine, and transform materials into some great craft...sometimes, i modified their techniques in making things...i do it my own techniques and with my own design...but the basic purpose is the same...like making lunch bag, making tissue wallet...that's basic purpose...but i'd like to challenge myself...that's my learning from japanese books...my goal is one day, in my flickr will be dominated by my own design and creation...

I personally never add pictures from the books unless I'm asking a question. That's because I try to follow the requirements for a group. And this group says:

pictures to add: * scan a confusing part of a pattern (where it shows the directions in japanese) add it to the group pool, and let's try and figure out what it says! * and/or post photos of things you made from a japanese pattern. can you also put in the ISBN number or title of the book? thanks!

Did you all know there is actually a Japanese Craft Books group on Flickr? Maybe the description of this group can be changed or everyone should be adding book pictures to that group instead?

Also, I'm one of the members of Crafting Japanese. There hasn't been any contributions since February. So if anyone wants to share book pictures, please feel free to email book links there. I used to check the email quite regularly but less now since participation has dropped to nothing.

hmmm I must be looking at the wrong pool because I see that the majority are in fact photos of handmade japanese inspired creations than otherwise... even for the top contributors...
or were photos deleted ?? which is a great shame if they were.

yes Kuky I am aware that there is a group for the books only, but i am a member of this group and not the other, specificaly because here I can have the best of both worlds: the books *and* the creations from those or other books, plus the discussions on this group, that even not being so active as it used to, are a great archive for new users like myself. Thanks to this group I have discovered not only new techniques (for me), new things to try and rediscovered my love for embroidering, for example, this thanks to both photos of handmade work and of books.

One could also say that photos of materials for sale (as fabrics or paper or otherwise) should not have a place here ...as none commercial activity is supposed to have a place in Flickr in the first place ....

in fact, we the 1,453 Members can discuss this ...but it doesn't make sense discussing it because there will be at least 1453 opinions :-)

I am the group founder and admin of this group and I never deleted any images from the group pool.

Yes, I did intend for people to post scans from book pages; and maybe highlight places where they had translation problems.

It would probably be more appropriate to post images of Japanese craft books in the appropriate group as Kuky Ideas linked above: flickr.com/groups/488098@N25/

However, I REALLY like looking at the images from the books; it makes it easier to know exactly which books to buy. So, for that personal reason, I won't delete any images people post of books. Nevertheless if the majority of people wish me to, I could remove those images.

Should we do this through a vote?

I don't mean to diminish anyone's feeling on the subject but looking at the pool's thumbnails I don't understand the whys of this discussion because it is not a general thing. What I see is that there are specifi members who are indeed using the group to show a couple of pages of the books , but it's not like you currently open the group and all you'l see is books ... it's not even the majority

images from books:
page1 : 2 photos
page 2 : none
p 3: none
p 4: none
p 5: 6
p 6: 5
p 7: 7
p 8 : 9
p 9 : 9
p 10: 3

and so on...

so the action should be to contact those specif members and request that they add 1 or 2 pages at the time of the books they buy instead or 5 or 6.....
even to, for me at least, they are being extremely kind showing a little bit of the inside of the book, sincce it helps deciding which book to buy next or not (expensive, expensive).

to me is far more serious to see that there are photos of commercial promotion than to see photos of books , since *that* goes totally against the Flickr guidelines... and yes, there is also specific users who are displaying books for sale and should be treated as such: a specific situation, instead of being unfair to the ones that use this group as a whole in terms of information gathering...

I too like looking at everything in one place. And that way I wouldn't have to send my photos to another group.

I think it'd be easiest to add in the description of the group "Also share pictures and scans from books and magazines". Then everyone would know it's within the rules to post pictures from books. :)

And I don't mind seeing a lot of pictures from a book at once. Because I absolutely agree. They are expensive. So it is nicer to see more pages before you buy. But of course I guess if there was a limit we could click through to the person's photostream to see the rest of them.

I use Japanese craft books for inspiration and looking at a book never bothered me. I never noticed that this group was showing too many of them (maybe they got deleted by their owners).
I like this group it is good to see the great art work (be it Japanese made or inspiration), But putting this matter to a vote will not solve the issue (this sphere is not meant to become to complicated), here we have a set of guidelines to which before signing up one had to agree upon, maybe the Admin, could reflect a bit on this matter and issue a request or recommendation of what not should be done in this group.
I agree that this group should not be used for commercial purposes, that I believe is against the spirit of the group.

Keep happy crafting or members will start to lose interest!

That is great advice guys. I am going to add a mention in the "agreement" when people join, and also a bit into the description:
"Also share pictures and scans from books and magazines" - as Kuky says... however, I will still point them to the specific groups/websites for "just" books so members can find more of the stuff they are looking for.

Thank you, sweetnichan, for bringing up this topic. I hope you still find the group useful :)

hmmmmm..... I'm confused.

I don't want to a trouble maker, but in my opinion, almost Japanese craft book says "Do not copy, reproduction or reproduce of a part or all of this book without permission.".

...so if you have any question for Japanese language or translation, please send me a flickr mail. or, you should set the picture to "private(friends and family only)", I think.

*shrug*

Those publishers of craft books... hmm... I think they should be quite pleased about all the advertisement they are getting. Craft book already have such a small audience, to be honest. I'd be really surprised if a smart business person did not see it as an opportunity!

Maybe this is why you don't see publishers coming around demanding people take them down. I bet they have noticed a significant increase in over-seas sales. Entire businesses have grown around the export of japanese books/fabrics... AND Japanese publishers are smartly translating and distributing in English.

In terms of corporations and copyright, and their efforts to limit distribution or control ideas... I have some strong feelings about it. I don't want to force them on the group but... well... I can't say much about the topic of the "righteousness" of whether or not people should copy. It's a really huge debate, and I think outside the scope of this group. I read some McLuhan on the subject, I can't remember the quote but the having the "copy" increases the desire for the "original"...

So... that is why all this 'advertisement' and 'user groups' are good for them.

Besides...

Wouldn't it be a real bummer if someone came along and pointed out to you that all the fabrics you are using in your products that you sell are copyrighted? And that you are not allowed to sell products made with those fabrics? And you can't sell products made from patterns you found in a book... Well.. ~~technically~~ this is the law and how they think about it... so... this is why I will *skirt* around this issue.

Thanks for your thoughts, Takae.

I'm still willing to debate this if others feel strongly about it. We could make an off-shoot group if you want?

I agree with you. Two months ago I didn't even know Japanese craft books existed but thanks to flickr am now the proud owner of 14 books!! I love them and where possible adapt the image to my own idea. I'm confused about all this talking about posting images from books here as I had understood this group was for both.

Crafty Dogma  Pro User  says:

I agree with feather. Posting images of finished projects from the books is great advertising for the publishers and is especially helpful for those of us who don't even understand the titles. It's common practice at Amazon. I think that it would be a different situation if we were posting images of the patterns and instructions as that would certainly undermine the publishers and authors.

Kuky Ideas  Pro User  says:

Yes I always wondered about copyright. But Crafty Dogma is correct about Amazon. Amazon even promotes sharing images with the "Share your own customer images" link. If publishers had a problem with it, I think they would definitely contact a person regarding their image.
