Pre-1: Check the photos you are going to critique for flooders. If you see any, do not rate those photos. Skip them and continue rating as usual.

About Constructive Comments 311

311
Hi. CC311 is about getting and giving Constructive Comments (versus the trivial, vanity or collector kind. )

HOW DOES THIS GROUP WORK?
311 = 3+1+1. Critique the three photos immediately before yours, plus one photo of your own choosing from anywhere on the front page, plus one from anywhere on the first five pages. Members may also critique any other photo in the pool at any time, whether in conjunction with submitting their own photo, or not. Always use the Official Critique Code (below) to show your comments came from this group. If you don't use that code, your comments will not be recognized as affiliated with this group, and you're on your own with that.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Append the following Official Critique Code ((OCC) group tag)) to your comment via copy and paste:

<b>(From the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/constructivescores/">Constructive Comments 3+1+1</a> group) </b>

Allow at least three photos to post before you post again. That is the basic procedure. For a complete list of the rules, see the Complete Rules here. They are very useful and important to know.

HOW DO WE CRITIQUE PHOTOS? (or any artwork)
- Critique comments should be of a constructive nature. That means informative and helpful.

- Word your critique positively. That's including the flaws you perceive. The idea is to convey to the photographer how they can improve their work--not to just knock it.

- Address specific aspects of the photo. Stating you like or don't like a photo is OK for openers, but is not adequate for our purposes. Stating what you like or don't like and why you like or don't like it, is what we're going for here.

- In other words, we are asking you to THINK CAREFULLY about the photos you are critiquing in order to be clear in your own mind specifically what went into the making of that photo and to provide the specific, useful feedback to the photographer about what he did well or could improve.

- Critique does not only mean finding what is wrong with a photo. It is also finding what is right with it. To be inclusive, provide that aspect with your critique. In fact, be sure to do so, and mention at least one good thing about every work. Usually right up front is the best place for that.

- As you develop more expertise taking photos and evaluating the result of yours and others photos, and with the practice you can get here; you want to be able to deconstruct a photo. That is, just by looking at it, be able to tell, approximately at least, what focal length lens was used, what aperture it was set to, the shutter speed that was used, the ISO, the distance from the camera to the subject, the distance from the subject to the background, the time of day (in terms of the sun's height), the direction of the sun, the quantity, location, and type of any lights used, any gels used on those lights, etc., etc.

For more ideas on how to critique, reference the [Official] Critique Guidelines

WHY DO WE CRITIQUE PHOTOS?
1. The best reason to critique other people's photos is because it's one of the best ways to improve your own photography. It forces you to be clear and specific about how to create or improve the aspects of a photo that combined go into making a good photo. Or conversely, things to avoid.
2. It is difficult to be objective with our own work. We tend to have an emotional attachment to it. For that reason, it is actually easier to objectively evaluate someone else's work than our own.

Notes:
- If you don't post the required comments, your photo, and possibly you, will be summarily and unceremoniously booted.
- For several years this group was set up to give one comment per photo submitted. Starting in 2010, we went to the 311 format.

Thanks for reading and participating in the group.
