About Connecticut River

The Connecticut River, New England’s longest, stretches for 410 miles from its source to the sea. Its vast basin links a spruce-fir ridge bordering Quebec with estuary tides pushing across Long Island Sound from the Atlantic Ocean. Water is the bedrock of this river system: surface water, groundwater, swamps, bogs, currents, lakes and tides.

Although the Connecticut has many beautiful, natural stretches, photos here also show its less attractive aspects. The river has improved tremendously since it was dubbed "the best landscaped sewer in America" in the 1950s, but the present reality is still far from pristine.

Images in this group show the diverse nature and culture from the main river, and its many tributaries, streams and wetlands. We invite you to share photos of people and wildlife living, working and playing throughout the watershed.
