About Coney Island History Project Activities 2005-2011
Do you have photos of Coney Island History Project activities from 2005 through the present? Photos of friends and family visiting our exhibition center and participating in CIHP events are welcome!
We made this group to showcase a wide variety of photos relating to the Coney Island History Project. We are interested in photos of CIHP activities and exhibitions, both in our Coney Island exhibition center and off-site venues. This includes CIHP exhibitions and lectures at Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn College, etc. Since we started our flickr photostream in 2008, we are especially interested in images from 2005-2007.
If you have images to add to the pool and are not already a member, we would love to hear from you. Please send us a flickr mail for an invite to join the group.
Please note the group is not about Coney Island in general, nor is it about Coney Island history in general. We are looking for photos documenting the Coney Island History Project.
The History Project's flickr photostream began as a visual diary of visitors and activities at the exhibition center during the 2008 season. We enjoy it so much that we recently launched two flickr groups. The purpose of our second flickr group “Coney Island is Alive and Kicking and Welcomes Visitors in 2009!” is to show the world that contrary to news reports, Coney Island Is NOT Closed. The group showcases the best of the best images of attractions that will *definitely* be here to welcome visitors in 2009.

The Coney Island History Project, founded in 2004, is a not-for-profit organization that aims to increase awareness of Coney Island's legendary and colorful past and to encourage appreciation of the Coney Island neighborhood of today. Our free exhibition center below the Cyclone is open weekends Memorial Day through Labor Day. Please visit our website year round @ www.coneyislandhistory.org/index.php
Our public programs began in 2005 with the opening of the Coney Island Hall of Fame, an exhibit that honors influential figures in history, and Coney Island Voices an oral history archive that preserves the stories and memories of people who visited or lived and worked in Brooklyn's famous playground.
In 2006 we sponsored a major Coney Island photography exhibition at the Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza. We also continued our local history learning programs with students at Mark Twain Junior High School, the Global Studies School, Brooklyn College, and the South Brooklyn Youth Consortium.
In 2007, we presented slide talks at the American Museum of Folk Art and Brooklyn College, and inaugurated our public exhibition center under the Cyclone roller coaster in Coney Island. Our 2008 season included exhibitions on Woody Guthrie’s Coney Island years and the Astroland Archives. Our exhibtion center under the Cyclone roller coaster will open for the 2009 season on Memorial day Weekend.
