Conclave: A Journal of Character opened for submissions on April 1 and will continue to accept photos until July 1, 2009.

This is a group for those interested in submitting their black and white photographs for the annual print journal Conclave: A Journal of Character. www.conclavejournal.com

The submission period for the 2009 issue are April 1 to July 1. At that time we will close the group and make our decisions.

We seek photos of pristine composition and revelatory content, black and white photographs that evoke personality, an unforgettable story, a compelling emotion, the decisive moment.

We are a character-focused journal, and we want the photographs that we feature to reflect that sensibility. Clearly, there are other styles and methods for capturing character in photography, and we look forward to seeing your interpretations. Like Cartier-Bresson, we are looking to capture, "fixed eternity in a moment."

The photographs should appear to be candid. We are not looking for posed photographs or photographs that have been significantly photoshopped. We are also generally not looking for landscapes or nature photographs.

It is our hope that the photographs posted will transcend mere portraits or snapshots; they really should reflect the style and sensibility of Cartier-Bresson's work.

Please post photographs that you would like us to consider, and we will contact you if we are interested.

At this time we can offer one contributor's copy per author for accepted work. We hope that will change in the future. We reserve the right to put your piece on our web site and/or publish it electronically if it has appeared in our journal. If we accept your work, we understand you grant us first North American serial rights (and Conclave anthology rights). All subsequent rights are yours, though we expect any future publication to carry acknowledgment that the work first appeared in Conclave.
