About Concentration camp Westerbork
In world war 2 this camp is used to deport Jewish people, gipsies and resistance fighters to extermination camp like Auswisch, Bergen-Belsen, Theresienstadt. Altogether there where 107.000 people deported to German concentrationcamps. Only 5.000 of the 107.000 have survived. On 12 april 1945 this camp was liberated by Canadian soldiers. On that moment there where 900 prisonars left in this camp.
After the libaration the camp was used for imprison collaborators and people of the National Socialist Movement ( Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging; NSB).
After that this camp became a residence for the demobilised Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (Koninklijk Nederlands Indisch Leger; KNIL) soldiers. At that moment the camp was called Schattenberg.
In 1970 Queen Juliana unveiled the national monument of Westerbork. That was disigned by an old prisoner cald Ralph Prins.
