How to...

...make a composite shot? Well, it was with great curiosity I viewed fubuki's wonderful shot of himself holding a gun to himself.
Not a day later Caterina featured Composites on the Flickr blog.
I knew I had to try it. But how? So after some experiments, here's the technique I found works:
1. Camera on tripod.
2. Shoot the same scene with the subject in different parts of the photo, being careful not to overlap.
3. In Photoshop, drag the background of one photo onto the other (while holding the shift key to drop it centered). This creates a layer.
4. Adjust the opacity of the layer to about 70%.
5. Now with the select tool of choice, draw along whatever borders you can and cut the portion of the photo to reveal the background beneath.
6. Return opacity to 100%
7. Adjust levels to ensure they match seamlessly.
8. Flatten the image and save.
Now, this works, but I've seen some photos in this group where there is overlapping of layers. I would love to hear alternate techniques to compositing these types of shots!
Anybody?

Sorry its been a while. I originally started this group to put my composite images in, which are more of the panorama type thing. There are a number of tools out there such as Autostitch which will do a very nice seamless picture with nice "fish eye effects" (see some of the pictures by Steffe). I used a much simpler technique of just patching a lot of images together (also see some Tingy images). The latest composite images which are multiple digital exposures or photoshop layers I keep meaning to have a go at, but the technique you describe above sounds great. Again sorry for not getting a response earlier.

Thanks for sharing macaddict, I will definitely try this tonight. Will this work if multiplied by 3 or more as well?
Phillip, I checked out the autostitch website too, that's excellent! Thanks.

i make "joiners" like David Hockney. They are suposed to look clumsy and "cubist".
it´s all copy + paste in photoshop.

Thanks macaddict, seems obvious once you know how. I followed your guide up to the layering part. I did no selecting, I just used the eraser tool and rubbed out the parts of the top layer(s) I did not want.
