About IDS Photography Competition
2011 IDS Central Communications photo competition
Call for submissions – deadline: 6th May
You still have a chance to win £150 Amazon gift vouchers and have your photography featured in a new photo exhibition in IDS.
As the original deadline for submissions to the 2011 IDS Photo Competition fell during a term break we have decided to extend the deadline to Friday May 6th. We are also pleased to extend the competition to the University’s Global Development Studies students. As stated before, the competition is also open to staff, ex-staff, IDS students and alumni.
IDS Staff will then vote for one overall winner who will receive a £150 Amazon gift voucher.
A panel of judges including Lawrence Haddad, Nick Perkins and members of the IDS Space Committee, will meet in April to select a short list of outstanding images to be included in the new IDS building display. Judges will be looking images that incorporate some or all of the following attributes:
• Strong visual impact
• Original and authentic visual representations of development in action
• Powerful human interest stories
• Empowering to poor and marginalised people
• Outstanding technical ability
• Relationship to IDS core values and identity
Both portrait and reportage photography may be submitted. Black and white as well as colour photography is eligible. Although some digital enhancement is acceptable we cannot accept images that have been digitally altered to change what is portrayed.
* Special consideration will be given to images that come with captions or very short case studies that provide context or a platform for the voices of poor or marginalised people.
* All images submitted will be considered for inclusion in the IDS image library.
* Please see IDS’ visual image guidelines for information on ethical collection and use of images.
Who can enter?
IDS employees, former employees, current students, alumni and Sussex’s Global Development Studies students are all eligible to submit images to this competition. Individuals may submit a maximum of 10 images. Further limitations apply to those who wish to submit images directly by email (see instructions on submitting your photography below).
What format and size must the pictures be in?
Only digital pictures can be considered and to be submitted to the judging panel images must have a minimum specification of:
• Size: At least 1MB
• Print resolution: 300 dpi
• File type: JPG or TIFF (no gifs or web images).
• Both portrait and landscape orientation is acceptable
Please note: Images found to be too small or with a resolution too low to meet these requirements may still be added to the IDS Image library as they may be suitable for web use and small printed reproductions. However they will not be eligible for the competition.
When will the shortlist and overall winner be announced?
The final short list of winners will be announced by mid May and be incorporated into the new IDS building photo display over the summer under the supervision of the Space Committee.
Once the shortlisted entries are put on display – either around the building or via an online photo slideshow that will be made available online – staff will be invited to vote for an overall winner.
6th May - Closing date for entries
End of May – Short list announced
May/June - Staff vote
June – Overall winner announced
June/July – New Photo display opened
