About Now and Then III: Community Photo Contest

View Historic Images

The Columbus Museum in Columbus, Georgia is hosting an online photo contest. Seventeen photographs from the Columbus State University Archives and a private collection will serve as the inspiration for all photographs that are submitted. All entries must reference one of these historic images in a manner that broadly addresses the themes of Columbus "now" and Columbus "then." Visit "Historic Images" below. Each participant is limited to three entries. Winners will be featured in the special exhibition "Now and Then III: Community Photo Contest" on view from March 19 - August 21, 2011.

Contestants are free to choose how they respond to the historic images. These images should be considered as a starting point for interpretation. Other creative interpretations of the historic images and their relationship to today are encouraged, as well.

1. How do I enter my photos in the contest?

a. Both amateur and professional photographers are invited to participate.

b. You must be 19 years of age and older to participate.

c. Join the Columbus Museum Flickr Group if you are not already a group member.

d. From November 15, 2010 through January 31, 2011 (mid-night EST)
add your color or black and white photo to the pool and tag it "now
and then" and include the title of the inspiration photograph. If you forget to
tag your photo it will not be entered in the contest. The Museum is not responsible
for lost, late, misdirected, incomplete entries, or technical errors.

e. Upload the highest-resolution image as possible (300 dpi or higher). The
winning images will be printed out for the Museum’s exhibition and a high
resolution image ensures the best quality.

f. If you have any questions about how to join Flickr.com (it’s free!) or tag your photos, see FAQs

g. Be sure to read the contest rules below.

2. What are the rules that I need to follow?

distribute the image.

e.The Museum has the right to refuse any submission.

f. By adding your photo to the Museum’s Flickr Group Pool and tagging it
"now and then" you authorize The Columbus Museum to:

limited to educational, advertising, marketing, promotional purposes,
and in publications of the Museum including books, posters, film,
internet use, and merchandise), in any media in perpetuity.

2. Use your name as the creator of the entry.

3. You maintain all other rights to your image.

g. Employees and volunteers of the Museum and their immediate families and
household members are not eligible to enter.

h. By participating in the contest you agree to the terms of these rules.

3. How will the winners be chosen?

a. Photographs will be chosen from the submissions by The Columbus
Museum.

b. Judging will be based on: Composition, Creativity, and Technical Quality.

notified.

d. These 20 semi-finalists will receive a photography release form and affidavit
of eligibility to be signed. You will be required to fax or mail the release form to
the Museum within seven days or an alternate submission will be selected.

e.The semi-finalists will be contacted to provide a written statement (250 words
or less) explaining the inspiration and connection between the historic
photograph and your work. The statements submitted will be placed next to the
winning photographs.

f. Out of those 20 semi-finalists, the first-, second- and third-place winners will
be chosen.

g. All 20 photographs will be printed, matted, and framed and mounted in a
Museum exhibition that will run from March 19 – August 21, 2011.
