Codell made history and world records: Codell was hit by cyclone/twister/tornado's three years in a row on May 20th in the year 1916, 1917 and 1918.

On May 23, 1918 in the Plainville Times Newspaper are a few quotes: "Monday, May 20th, has been considered cyclone anniversary day at Codell. Two years ago a cyclone passed, just east of town one mile on the 20th of May, and one year ago three miles west, but so far, at 8:00 p.m., no cyclone but thundering and looks like we are going to get a rain." (Note by Editor of Plainville Times: The above unusual item was written Monday before the tornado and mailed to the Times office by WA Barry, our correspondent about two hours before the storm struck Codell.) The headlines "TORNADO TRAVERSES TREGO, ELLIS, ROOKS AND OSBORNE COUNTIES. TEN KILLED, SCORES OF INJURED. PROPERTY DAMAGE IN MILLION. CODELL IN PART RUINS" and the details of all the damage covered the whole front page.
