If you like the image, then pay for it...

Isn't CNN a multi-billion dollar corporate media empire?
Please stop soliciting yourselves to amateur and professional art, documentary, and journalistic photographers, expecting them to give you their images in-perpetuity for attribution. That's exploitation and simply low. If you like an image, and it will garner attention to your news outlet, thus bringing in advertorial dollars, then pay a fair market rate for it. Giving credit is not payment.
And if this message is deleted from the topic list, thereby preventing legitimate dialogue, I will spread it across the Flickrnet and note that you did so.
Thank you,
Craig Morse

I don't see what the big deal is. I think CNN has something going for them.
Even though pro-photographers make their money from rolayties and getting paid, there are people out there with good images that need to be seen that don't mind getting just credit for it.
If you don't like the idea then don't submit your photos to CNN.
I am a combat cameraman in the Marine Corps. All of our pictures are public domain. When I was published on the front page of pretty much every newspaper from NYC to Miami to LA, did I complain about not making a buck? No way. I cut it out and put it in my scrapbook.
Sure CNN sucks (and so does Fox and MSNBC) but if it is a away for ams to get published then so be it.
And if you are mad because it is taking away from your sales then get with the times or become a staff photographer somewhere.

I agree with jdubfudge. However, I myself have been lucky enough to have sold two unsolicited photos on my photostream. Some good organizations do search Flickr for photos and will pay for use of images!

The very fact that we CAN get an image in front of so many people so quickly just by uploading it to Flickr is absolutely incredible. Bringing something that is newsworthy in front of such a large audience as CNN commands would be more than enough satisfaction for many folks.
As a professional photographer (which I am not), I can see how this would be a more serious issue but I believe that participation in this is voluntary. I know that when I submit an image directly to CNN from my camera phone, the terms are very clear. I grant them non-exclusive rights to use the image I have sent. Of course, that's why I sent them the image! I want people to see something I thought was "news" and should be seen by people!
Again, I think that we have this ability is fantastic. I'm sure someone will (or perhaps already has?) develop(ed) a system through which photographers can submit images for consideration to news bureaus for which those photographers will be compensated. Maybe it would be best to seek out something like this if payment is of primary concern for your work here?
