hehe, I am just like everybody else, I love my Friday mornings, because then I get to see the new assignments. Synchronicity is helping me along, because I am going to a Dance Performance next Thursday, I actually thought about it yesterday morning, that it would be perfect if I could use it for cwd.... but what if I fail taking good pics, that would be my last chance... whatever thanks for pushing me each week!!!

Could you please tell me what "phone in" means? If self-portraits are excluded, that's usually clearer ("No self-portraits!") But now it seems they are in some other category. Phone in?

Yeah, I was scrolling down to ask what dogfaceboy asked. Anyone doing a self-portrait in a mirror will be tagged “phoned in.” That sentence doesn't make a bit of sense to me.

phoned in : I guess he means too obvious a choice. And I hope to get enough light for my camera to choose a fast shutter speed for the "frozen in time" shot. Else I'll have to fall back on the sports mode...

Not sure, but it sounds like self portraits for reflections will be accepted, but considered lame, like phoning in to a meeting???
I'd like more clarification on the reflection assignment in general. Does the reflective surface have to be a mirror, or could it be water, or a window, or something? Also what do you mean by
"Use reflections to complement your subject." ?
Does the subject have to be reflected? Sorry, but this one puzzles me.
That aside, I have to ditto abchick as well. I can't believe how much i am getting out of this.Sadly I did not get to complete an acceptable 8 sec shot for last week, but just experimenting, and seeing what everyone else did taught me a lot. This is awesome!!!

Yeah, I'm gathering that it's a negative term, but does it mean we shouldn't do them at all? Does it mean we can do a self portrait if it's totally kick-ass? Does it mean we shouldn't use a person at all - even if it's not our 'self'?
And no matter what kind of camera you have, you can get enough light to do the freeze frame assignment with the sun.

Phoned in: No real creativity or effort. An easy way out. For our group you could consider it the opposite of a Gold Star. I'm leaving it in becasue perhaps someone can do something very creative. Perhaps.
Water is a perfect reflecting surface, any refelcting surface can be used here. Not just mirrors. The reflection can be the subject, but obviously it will be a reflection of something. Your reflection should make it better somehow.

I hate to 'correct the teacher', but a photo with no creativity or effort would not be the opposite of a gold star, given that gold stars are simply Dave's favorites from the group and not an indicator of how technically sound or creative a shot is. Just don't want any newbies reading this thread to think they've done poorly simply because they haven't received a gold star.

Okay, sounds pretty good. I'm not sure if my little camera will do a decent job with the "Frozen in Time", but I'll give it a go.
"Phoned in"...well, it does sound kinda lame...I mean, I understand what you're saying on it being the "easy way out"...but then you say that "if it's really creative"...well it'll still get tagged "Phoned in" which isn't very nice Teach ;-P
Dance....hmm, mama don't dance too much...i don't go places where people dance...how is THIS gonna work? I don't have any weddings to go to this week....and that's about as exposed to it as I get.

Dear everyone in this group:
YOUR CAMERA CAN STOP ACTION!
I guarantee it. Frankly, I'd probably have an easier time stopping action with my P&S than with my SLR.
No excuses on that one! :-) :-) :-)

Hmph. I've done some very fun and what I thought were creative SPs with mirrors. I love mirrors. They are one of my faves. Granted, I have done mirror shots that are totally lame, but there are a handful that I'm really proud of. Phoned-in, indeed. ;)

I think all Dave's getting at is that a self-portrait is the easy choice for the mirror assignment. And if you've done them before...all the more reason to try something different, right?

I know it can, I was just saying that I hope to have enough light to be able to use the auto mode where I have a little amount of control over a "sports" mode where I can't even chose iso or exposure compensation. I'll be out of that situation in a few weeks...

@Cherron, The pics you point out are pretty interesting, and there's really no way for us to know it was a self-portrait. I'm talking about these: www.flickr.com/search/?w=all&q=mirror+portrait&m=...
@revlimiter. I really try to be a open as I can about these stock type assignments. But we should be able to figure it out. Showing a picture of an empty Gym and telling us you went to a dance there would be pretty lame.
Oh, and I agree with Dave, every camera can feeze action. ISO 400, 500th of a second will freeze a subject on a pretty cloudy day. Both of those settings are available on every camera in the group. At least I'm pretty sure...
@pi c, Fortune favors the bold. A good image can't be "phoned in."

Yeah, I was just joking a bit. Too bad this wasn't a couple of weeks ago. I took an interesting photo of a little girl reflected in her dad's antique car mirror. The little tiny round side mirrors. It was fun. This mirror assignment should be interesting. The dance one really has me intrigued.

Am I the only nerd who fantasizes about ways to combine the three assignments into one perfect shot? Many dance studios are lined with mirrors, and freezing the dancer's actions would be a challenge. Not that I can do it, its just how my brain spins..... I won't share my ideas about last weeks grime / water / 8 secs....

I am a teacher, too. I have taught college English for 17 years. I've never heard of "phone in" as a synonym for lame, but I guess I understand.
When I teach, I tell my students that beginning with a dictionary definition, for example, sucks. If they do that, they'll get no points for creativity. So don't do it, I say. A dictionary definition can only be one thing. It doesn't have the range of options that a reflective self-portrait has.
I can imagine a few reflected self-portraits that would show amazing creativity.
I was the one suggested that people try things other than the face portrait for the "side lighting" assignment. I wouldn't have called any of them a "phone in," even though it was an obvious choice. Some people did amazing side-lit face portraits.
I could see you saying to people that they ought to keep the bar high for themselves and do things that aren't so obvious. But how can you judge a photo before you see it? It's like saying all fruit still-life paintings are going to be lame because so many painters have done them. So I would like to, politely, recommend that you make it a rule in this case, like you've done before.
It's my issue, I guess. I think a suggestion is better than a pre-judgment, but if you don't want self-portraits, well, you know.

I would think the opposite of a gold star is a zero--you get that for sucky work or for not handing in the assignment. As long as there is general competency--focus, clarity, etc.—a lame-o subject should earn a C. That's average, as in what most people would think to do.

FWIW, I've heard "phoned it in" in relation to an actor who doesn't put any effort into a part - like they just phoned in their lines. If I remember, critics labeleld Marlon Brando's effort in "Superman" as phoned in because he made a few million dollars for a lame performance.

I agree that this might have been overstated, but I think that it has been clarified.
For the rest of you, see my favorite "Phoned In" reflection shot here! I liked how the car window's curvature distorts the trees shape and color.

Here is a good definition of "phoned in":
