Hey guys,

First of all, I have to say how much I miss you all - I am incredibly out of the loop at the moment, and with a bad case of Thesis Hermititis. Did anybody end up applying for the GRL masterclass? If anyone does go, and gets as excited as we are about experimenting with electricity then never fear - Adelaide Dorkbot is here!

If you've never heard of Dorkbot before, check out the official page at
www.dorkbot.net (its just a bunch of links to other Dorkbots around the world).

And if anybody is doing anything strange with electricity (throwies, light graffiti, whatever) then let us know - we want to hear! (and maybe get you to do a seminar about it!) (and then we might put it in dB or On Dit).

With love from your friendly Adelaide Dorkbot team:
Christian Haines (head of school, mus. tech., Adel. Uni.), Sebastian Tomczak (lecturer, mus. tech., Adel. Uni) and yours truly!

oh wow! super sweet. i'll let everyone know in the next ex-a-sketch email newsletter.

we did do some throwies experiments, but never really took off because we couldn't really justify the environmental impact of lots of batteries scattered around the place.

super keen to do some form of h4cking when the new adelaide carpark LED lights get installed. can't wait to try and do some of our own displays.. mwa ha ha ha haah..

also super keen to build in some lights into our next box wall if you dorkbots are keen? vimeo.com/371245

artemis: very keen to see your light graffiti photos!

oooh... ex-a-dork! ha ha - I like it!

Sorry I wasn't meeting with you all tonight as I had so hoped - been flat out getting the business ready to head to Japan next week so am completely out of artistic enthusiasm.

Artemis - it would be great to have you along at our sessions - the first meeting wont be for a couple of months yet, but I'll make sure you're in the loop.

Si, the rundle lantern project sounds fantastic - I can imagine a collaborative project with some of our tech. boys (Seb is very much into LED stuff at the moment - he may be able to help out).

I'll put a request in to dorkbot for y'all and keep you posted on any updates.

Keep on trucking,

Lauren.

Sounds like a good idea, what do you need to get started?

I'm currently a member of a group called Air-Stream Wireless www.air-stream.org.au and have built much of the custom electronics and metalwork across the network. My background is electronics engineering and manufacturing, but have been working as CEO of a Disability Employment Organisation www.sage.org.au

Anyway my current group helps me focus on specific wireless networking projects, but the scope of projects is not enough to meet my needs to pursue other electronic/electric/mechanical interest. I realize you need other people to give feedback, on how good/bad/interesting/different an idea or direction is in order to stay focused on a specific project and so see it through to completion without being distracted by yet another interesting idea and pulled off on a tangent., so a new group is just the ticket :-)

I have access to a Metal Working factory and other sites to hold meetings also hosting facilities to start up websites, IRC, mail and of cause lots of wifi stuff.

hey robert,

nice work with the air-stream wireless network!
i stayed with a guy in toronto who was setting up wirelesstoronto there. similar project. great idea!

i'll prod lauren and see what she wants to work on next.

a friend of mine is building his own projector, and once that's finished, we'll try getting a semi-permanent laser tagging setup going. :)

cheers, si.

Look forward to hearing something..

In my search for other similar groups just came across this one, should be very interesting, very much the direction I'm looking to go.

oops... hey... I've been M.I.A. for a while, huh.

Robert... Christian Haines said you had been in touch. We're certainly looking forward to getting Dorkbot Adelaide underway ASAP. Unfortunately its a bit of a slow process but looking forward to meeting up with you at our next planning session.

And sorry to the kids for my giant leave of absence. I've been trying to keep on top of all my own stuff and slowly forget about the joys of ex-a-sketch. What a silly sausage!
