About Chungking Mansions
Around 4,000 stay in the building every night: people from Africa, South Asia and other areas of the world come for fortune. 90 guesthouses and 380 businesses are in the building including food stands, sellers of mobile phones, watches, electronic items, clothing, illegal drugs, and prostitutes.
It's estimated that around 120 nationalities stay here on any given night... among them are tourists, business owners and their workers, refugees, asylum seekers, and traders. Gordon Mathews, anthropologist and professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong calls the Chungking Mansions one of the best examples of "low-end globalization" in the world.
To most native Hong Kongers, the Chungking Mansions is a dangerous place, a place for drugs and petty theft. Many tourist's first visit is a nightmare... a night in a fire hazardous, rat infested slum. To some it is an amazing business center, with all different types of nationalities working together to better their lives. What are the Chungking Mansions to you?
