What's a cloister ?

A cloister (from latin claustrum) is a part of cathedral and abbey architecture. A cloister consists usually of four corridors, with a courtyard or quad in the middle.


Secondo il dizionario De Mauro un chiostro è:

1 CO cortile circondato da porticati posto all’interno di conventi, abbazie e sim.
2 LE estens., convento, monastero
3 LE luogo appartato, spazio chiuso, angusto
4 TS arch., luogo recintato in cui erano situate le abitazioni dei canonici della cattedrale
