About Birds of Beidaihe
Dedicated to the birds of Beidaihe and the surrounding area (from Happy Island to Old Peak).
If you are a birder who has even a remote interest in Chinese birds, most probably you would have heard of Beidaihe in Hebei province (which is two and a half hours east of Beijing by motorway or fast train).
Every year since 1995, birding groups have been visiting the area in May to witness one of the great migration spectacles.
Countless numbers of birds of more than 200 species stream through on their way to their breeding grounds in Manchuria and Siberia.
But in recent years, birders have been coming here in other months to enjoy quite a different flavour of mass migration: In October and November, thousands of cranes of sometimes eight species pass through on their way to their wintering grounds in Jiangxi and Jiangsu provinces.
Even in winter, as you will see from the photos, Beidaihe can be full of surprises!
If you have any good quality photographs of birds of Beidaihe, I would be delighted to hear from you
