What kind of profile do we expect of this group?

Well, now that we’ve passed 1000 images in CHILDRENS PORTRAITS, and done so very quickly indeed, I think it's a good time for reflection. So I was wondering if any of our members would like to comment on photos in the pool, which they feel may not fit into our category of CHILDRENS PORTRAITS, either singular or group. Maybe we need to take a closer look at some of these and hear what members have to say? Portraits can become quite symbolic sometimes, so we should be open for all your arguments.

I have already deleted some images, which I as group admin feel are obviously not in the correct category as described in the group description. That doesn’t mean these are not worthy images, on the contrary, I just feel there are other children’s groups more suitable for those images and as we all know, there's nothing stopping an image being posted in several groups if it first suits the contents of those groups.

If you had one of yours deleted, don’t hesitate to join this thread and share your viewpoints. Maybe I was wrong but so far nobody has questioned my actions. Feel free to post it back in this thread so we can hear what other's mean about it's suitability. I think it is important we agree on the kind of profile we wish this group to have as there are thousands of groups on Flickr, each one for their own reason and each one with their own profile formed by the images posted in them.

Here are a couple of examples that might question our different viewpoints (not necessarily mine, but nevertheless...)

Brother and Sister

and

boy in lonliness/ wel-come

...and there are many others in our pool that might be nice to present in this thread so please go ahead.

Surfin on a Rock says:

The way I think of a portrait, it should in some way identify the person to be portraited. I want to catch something that is essential and unique for that person. For me, that would mean that I would at least include some parts of their face. I don't often see photos only of bodyparts as identifying for a person, and therefore not as a portrait. That does not mean that those photos aren't personal.
A comment on the picture of the boy in the bus: The photographer has included a lot of the surrondings in the picture, which is maybe not often done in a classical portrait. The way I see it, the surrondings are essential in telling us about who this boy is, and therefore I think it fits the portrait category.

Thanks for surfin!
That's what we need a few more to do so that we can capture the essence of this group and not just the essence of our own photos.
Interesting reflections on the above images and I'm sure there are other members who would like to make comments.

Wakey, wakey!!!

Both images can follow into the catagory of "portraits". There was a very long discussion in the group "Portraits" the other day, so I'm a little drained out on the subject at the moment. Many people on both sides have passionate opinions if a portrait must have a face or not.

Sara Heinrichs (awfulsara) says:

My goodness yes, Vio. That dicussion wore me out and I didn't even participate. :)

I am of the opinion that a face is not necessary when portraits are presented in multiples. I feel a person, child or not, is made up of so many lovely details that it would be near criminal to limit the portrayal of that person to images that feature the face. But, to me, that only applies to my work as I present it - as a cohesive portfolio, gallery, etc.

I have come to think that for a group project such as this, single shots of hands, feet, whatever don't really work in this context. Separated from the rest of the person, from other photos that identify more of that person or identifying information (hands of a sculptor, for example, or a surgeon) they become just parts.

Since there are groups for body parts, etc, and these images can be presented in our sets, I would see no problem in setting guidelines about portrait style. If I were to write them, they would say something like this:

Photographs added to the group pool must feature children (obviously) and be recognizable. What does that mean? For example, any image including a face is clearly recognizable, but so is a view from behind. Creative compositions, perspectives, and crops are encouraged, but detail shots of areas other than the face are not, unless they are included as part of a diptych or triptych that also shows identifying features of the little one.

But the bottom line, Carf, is that it is very much your group to refine as you like, so I would encourage you to act accordingly. :)

Sara, you awfulsara,
Thanks so much for your very well defined feedback on the subject of portraits. Highly respected as the talented photographer you are.

By no means do I wish to enter into the realm of long, tiring discussions to reach a conclusion on this thread. I may have started the group but I would really like it to be the member's group as long as they all follow some simple rules.

I think your suggestions are really in line with what I had in mind so if you don't mind I will adopt them and join them to the group description page.
If there appear valid arguments to the contrary, I'm open to hear them and to amplify this realm.

So tell us your meaning folks!

Now that we have passed an astounding 5000 images in the CHILDRENS PORTRAITS photostream, I thought it would be nice to to showcase some of the images hidden away deep down there in that maze of thumbnails.
Please bookmark our latest Blog, UNITED CHILDREN OF THE WORLD and enjoy. There are so many wonderful images to choose from so I shall be adding a new photo from our stream each day for your appraisal.

Thanks for making our group such a great place to visit.
