This hurts so much. its so unreal. i got home from work (house of blues) and had some notion to check my flickr instead of go to sleep. flip was sitting at my table today with his friend. my boss gave them 25% off and bought the soup. i wished i couldve bought everything. we smiled and chatted a bit, i was busyish and didnt wanna bug em. i had no idea. living in oblivion. got home, hopped on here, and had an invite from saro to join an rip group, what??!?!?! seriously...no way!!! im in such shock. Brandon was full of life and love and light. his presence lit up a room, and then some. oh man, his smile, his laugh...such goodness. such a talented and young lovely human being. he is with us still and forever. his energy will continue to propel us forever. not just in our hearts, but in reality. that man IS brilliant - in every meaning that word has. every! thank you Brandon, for being such a true expression of yourself. thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Love,
@nna

This is shocking. SOLVE will be missed. The word itself was so important for me to see on a daily basis on the Chicago streets. It was a constant reminder of all the work there is to do in our community, in our world, of all the problems we have to in fact solve. Seeing those stickers was also a little beacon of hope for me that art has an important place in our society, especially as a wake-up call and voice of protest. Rest in peace Mr. Scanlon.
i hope we can all somehow make sure that the stickers he put up will stay up as a memorial.

I've been reading these discussions for the past couple days, and it just sounds like people who may have seen things, or know things about this murder, are not contacting the proper authorities. This is a life of a well loved and respected person who lost his life, and if there is still anyone out there that had something to do with his murder, they need to be behind bars where they belong. If this Bob Grannum is still a free man, it sound like people have more than enough evidence to at least get him back into questioning. From what I know of him, he is an extremely manipulative person, and a compulsive liar. Who knows, he could've said anything to get out of interrogation. Please do the right thing if you know or saw anything at that party, justice needs to be served, and let the guilt of knowing of your conscience. If it was a family member of yours who was murdered, wouldn't you want to right people behind bars? This is all so tragic and sad, and all we can do now is make the right choices and do the right thing, and let justice be served to the right people. RIP SOLVE

Bob is not at fault here, people. The police have already determined that. Kirk is in custody, has not posted bail, and will definitely not be getting out of this case.

i never got to meet him. he was my hero, the true reason i got into street art. everywhere you went there would be something of his, and it would make you think "how the hell did he do that?!" from ashland and 35th, to southport and grace. it was everywhere, and inspired all of us.he will never be forgotten, for he had such a great influence on all of us. he is with us forever and will always be remebered as one of ( if not ) the best street artists in chicago.
rest in peace solve.

Solve's art was the first I saw when I moved to Chicago a year ago--this piece welcomed me to my neighborhood, actually:

He was responsible for me looking at the city differently, noticing art on signs and corners and starting to get to know Chicago's urban geography through street artists.
It makes me ill to think that his potential was cut so short. My condolences to his family and friends.

Mad respect to the enthusiasm he showed to furthering the street art culture in chicago. Not sure who he was at the chicago round table in that art installation with the bullhorn, i never met him, but its a trip cus amidst so many people you never know whos around you, and then I find out about this. Hope people keep throwin solve stickers up- things in the city need to get solved.
Rest in Peace

On a side note, I didn't have the proper materials to add to SOLVE's memorial on Grand and Milwaukee but so far people have been respectful to it and left things up. I'll be back there this week after sundown to put up some art in his memory, anyone who has the time is welcome to come with.

I appreciate the support and love you've shown for Brendan's life, loves and work on this blog. Brendan's obituary is posted at: www.ryanfuneralservice.com/index.cfm
I've seen some discussion of sending flowers... In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials can be sent to “Madison East High School in Honor of Brendan Scanlon”, 2222 E. Washington Ave., Madison, WI 53704, to be donated to the art department.
Use the energy you've gained from Brendan's life for a positive purpose.
Signed, Brendan's uncle... luke

I knew Brendan in passing mostly through DJing at Artillery's stART shows, and always admired his work. He was a constant presence in the streets who randomly brightened my day many times.
Besides the DJing I write for magazines and blogs and wanted to use my connections to let whatever audience I can reach know about what a talented young man we all lost this past weekend. My post on Solve at the Urb Magazine blog can be found here: www.urb.com/permalink/3000/Solve,-Chicago-street-artist-R...
Thanks to Swiv for letting me borrow a piece of the interview he posted in these forums to really round out the piece and let the thousands of daily visitors to Urb's blog know about Brendan in his own words.

This thread is about commemorating Brendan's life, not about the case. If you have any evidence that is not hearsay internet talk then take it to the cops and dont gossip about it on this thread. Your post will be deleted. No hard feelings, but if you need to talk about it to someone give them a call in private rather than talking about it on this public forum. Thanks. Viking.

Sorry to change the topic back to the recent passing of our friend, we are leaving here at 8.30AM to get to Madison around noon. Is 94 the best way to go to avoid toll / construction? Drive safe, hope to see a lot of you there.

Im trying to steer this thread away from "finger pointing" of the "who did its" to a more general respect and honoring of Brendan, both his life and work. This is a touchy subject for most, and not something that I have to come and delete peoples posts etc. The topic isnt who did it, its about SOLVE. So say some nice things already and offcourse graffiti is against the law, we are just writing about our friend on the internet. No hard feelings.

the memorial service was yesterday. the support was so amazing there wasn't near enough room for everyone that was there. his art was all over and everyone young and old were carrying around his stickers. everyone had wonderful things to say and stories to tell. it's so nice that we all came together for this. i'm really glad that i could be a part of it.
Madison is obviously covered. it's raining out and my legs hurt from going out the last few nights (also, hung over), so i'll go out and flick tomorrow. until then, this is the last known girl paste-up in madison. it's been up for a real long time. melt touched it up with some fresh paste to try to give it a bit longer run.

I am so so so sorry to hear about this. I traded stickers with Brendan, he was so sweet. What an utterly stupid and hideous thing someone has done to him. This is just so insanely wrong. I can think of nothing but blathering sadness. My heart goes out to his family and friends. RIP Solve.

from my moms:
I was very touched by the depth of your feelings for your friend - so much so, that I have spent the last almost two hours reading about him via various news, blogs, myspace, flickr, and the art community. In a strange coincidence, I am working across the street from where he attended school. I pass there everyday I'm downtown. I look in the windows and see the students outside. I imagine that perhaps I walked right past him, not knowing him. I used to teach ESL in that same building and watched the students on break, many of them smoking even in the coldest weather. Our lives take turns only God can know about. His life took him into a place he would not have wanted, but in going there, we have all been touched. Even I, by the comments of support and love from his many friends, especially those who were with him or even saw the fight, not knowing it was him. We can't prevent what will be.
You are blessed to have known him,,,I can tell from the spirit I read in the messages. You are stronger for knowing him and witnessing the lacking of him. Please know that he will never be gone, because he taught you many things. You will know over the weeks and years more of what his presence taught you. Feel sad that he left too early. Feel glad that he is indelible for the living. Let the joy of knowing him and knowing that he cared about you and the great art he left...let those things wrap around you. Let his grand laughter echo.
Love
Ma

any word on Kirk Tobalski and his sentence?
Posted 42 months ago.
|

no.

Kirk Tobolski was accused and indicted by a grand jury of having murdered SOLVE on June 14, 2008. Tobolski was 24 and resided in Chicago at the time. He was arrested and jailed on June 14 and remained in the Cook County Jail until being released on bail on October 28, 2008. Somebody - apparently his immediate family - came up with $50,000 cash to get him out.
As long as Tobolski abides by the conditions on his being out on bail, he will be out until he pleads guilty of a crime or crimes associated with SOLVE's homicide or is found guilty of such a crime or crimes after a trial.
There will be no sentencing until, if ever, it is established "beyond a reasonable doubt" that he is guilty of such a crime or crimes, either by his pleading guilty or by his being found guilty after a trial.
If it comes to a trial, like it probably will, the trial is not likely to start before a year from now and might not start until more than 2 years from now.
The wheels of justice against accused perpetrators of serious crimes grind terribly slowly in Cook County. The prosecutors and judges who push those wheels are generally hardworking and very good, but they are overwhelmed with cases.
Justice after serious crimes takes forever in Cook County because priorities are all f_cked up. Though the system is too overwhelmed to process efficiently accusations of serious crimes, it processes with amazing speed accusations of trivial violations, like doing street art, that shouldn't be violations at all. We can thank Daley and his buddies, like Blagojevich, for those terribly misplaced priorities.
