has anyone actually had trouble with the cta?

I had another encounter with a cta security guard tonight, albeit a tame one. I was running around with my tripod (ding, ding, ding) doing long exposures around cicero on the pink line. apparently some conductor called me in when I was on a rail bridge (ding, ding, ding) and about an hour later, a beaten-up car pulled up a couple blocks south of that when I was shooting on a sidewalk. the security guard who came out of it was nice and believed me when I told him I did this "just as a hobby" and I doubt there was a lot he could have done anyway since I was rather far from actual cta property but after he left, two cop cars pulled up to the station, causing me to pick my stuff and bail into a side street. next railroad crossing: another cop car. next station: the same cops again, apparently looking.

I kind of feel I dodged a bullet tonight but I'm not sure. considering that I do run around with a 20d, lots of L-lenses and my tripod, I would hate to see it impounded or the likes, even temporarily. not to mention I'm not really interested in explaining again and again what I do.

thus I wonder if I should get myself prepared. if I should have the number of an attorney on hand should I get into a hairy situation with overprotective cops and security guards. I wonder what your experiences have been.

anyone had to deal more extensively with them than I had?

ive never had that problem but these days alot of security gaurds have kicked it up because of terrorism etc. Just make sure you are polite in confrontations (if you can). I carry a folded up photographers rights card just in case.

The CTA history and railfan site Chicago-L.org has a section on what supposedly is the CTA policy regarding photography, and CTA Tattler has an interesting discussion about the subject. I've decided that it simply isn't worth the potential hassle of taking pictures on the CTA these days.

I've been yelled at before, but I usually wait until the person doing the yelling (usually a conductor) leaves. Then the camera comes out again.

The CTA is one of my favourite subjects.

I also carry a folded up 'photographer's rights" paper with me at all times. If only as a reference should I ever need to argue with someone why what I'm doing ISN'T illegal.

I also don't carry as much gear as "memos to the future". I'm a little more able to not be intimidated. Because as long as you are not on private property, you can take pictures of absolutely whatever you please.

I actually had someone tell me it was illegal to take photos of the Sears Tower.....from a HALF BLOCK AWAY. I just laughed and took this:
