By adding images to this group, you agree to offer the image(s) for auction to help the people of Japan following the earthquake and tsunami.
The images must be your own, taken by yourself and you own the copyright.
From time to time we might use your auction image for a press releases to promote the group auctions. Please state clearly if you don't want your image used in such a way.
Magazines, newspapers and blogs will be asked to credit you as such: Flickr Name © All Rights Reserved
If you would rather use your real name, please state as such on your auction, example: Andrew Newson © All Rights Reserved
PRESS:
Please adhere to using the copyright format as above when using any of the images from this group.
You then MUST fill in your auction details in the text field of each image that you want to offer for auction. Failure to do this when you attempt to add them to the group will result in the image(s) being denied entry to the group.
The group is set up with a 1 image per day upload limit. You can add more than 1 image to the group, but we want to keep the quality high, so please don't submit more than 1 image per day and try to make it your best images.
If you are adding an image that is already in your Flickr stream, edit the taken date to today so it goes to the top of your stream and your contacts will see it again OR upload it again, so it goes to the top of your stream, if you choose the latter way, you might want to add a 'comment' to the existing image so anyone who had already commented or faved gets to see that you are now offering it for auction!
Here is a template for you to copy and paste in to your auction. Just fill in your details and you are ready to submit to the group.

Image Title
© Your Name - www.yourwebsite.com
I'm auctioning this print to help the people of Japan following the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
I would like you to start the bidding at XXXX
Size and type of print. For example:
12x8 inch print, c-type on Fuji Professional Glossy paper.
Please leave a comment with your offer, please only comment if you wish to bid, thanks.
The highest bidder at the time the auction ends will donate that amount direct to a trusted charity helping with the relief effort in Japan, such as:
British Red Cross:
Donate
Japanese Red Cross:
Donate
Save the Children:
Donate
World Vision:
Donate
Oxfam:
Donate
NOTE ON LINKS:
Sometimes these links become broken when copying. Either the HTML doesn't transfer or if I just do links, Flickr shortens the URLs and they don't work.
You can copy the straight links from my blog:
andrewnewson.co.uk/2011/03/18/charity-print-auctions-for-...
WANT TO BID - BUT YOU DON'T HAVE A FLICKR ACCOUNT?
Please just email me with a bid and I will place the bid in the comments on your behalf: your@emailaddress.com
The bidding will end on Day XX Month, 2011 at XX.XXpm + Your Time Zone. At this time, the person who wrote/commented or emailed the highest amount will have to give this amount to a legitimate charity involved in the effort for aid for the people of Japan. On proof of donation (please take a screen grab of your donation confirmation page!), I will arrange for the print to made and shipped to you.
I will pay for the print to be produced and pay for shipping, so all of your donation goes straight to the cause
For more information on this:

......................................................................................................
Additional information:
This group is for photographers who wish to donate a print of their choice, to be auctioned to raise money for the relief effort in Japan.
Auction Length:
The photographer chooses how long the auction will run for, meaning they will state clearly on their post what time and date the auction will end. Please also state your time zone! We recommend that an auction run for no longer than 7 days maximum and recommend a 3-5 day time frame works best.
When will all auctions finish?
T.B.A.
Print size:
The photographer also decides what size print they are offering and on what material. So please state clearly on your post what size print (state cm or inches!) and on what material it is or will be printed on (ie. fuji professional glossy etc).
Since the photographer will be paying for the print and the postage to the highest bidder, this may influence the size you choose to offer.
Credit / Copyright info:
From time to time I might use your auction image for a press release. Please let me know if you would rather I didn't. If you're okay with it, then please state your copyright / credit line.
I suggest:
© Joe Bloggs - www.yourwebsite.com
This will be used with any image that happens to make it in to a press release.
Offering alternative prints:
You are welcome to enter more than one print to be auctioned or even one auction with the highest bidder selecting from a number of prints. However just enter one image in to the group and link to others in your stream that you can offer. If you're offering more than one image for auction, you might list them as (A), (B) and (C) and people can bid on (A), (B) or (C). Or of they are offered as alternatives, the winner bidder just chooses (A), (B) or (C).
Paying:
All money bid will go to an official charity helping the efforts in Japan. Such as:
British Red Cross:
Donate
Japanese Red Cross:
Donate
Save the Children:
Donate
World Vision:
Donate
Oxfam:
Donate
When the auction finishes, the person with the highest bid has to pay that amount to the charity. They will take a screen grab of the payment/donation confirmation to send to the photographer as proof of payment and will also post that screen grab in the 'proof of payment' thread.
The photographer then arranges for the print to be made and posts to the winner at the cost of the photographer. Please see the advice for printing and packaging thread.
When you've sold your print
When you've auction has finished, you will need to remove it from the group. This is important as people will be searching the group to find photos to bid on.
Also, when your auction as finished and you have a winning bidder, head over to this discussion thread 'Sold Prints' and let us know which image sold, for how much and to who. This is really important as It will help us calculate a total amount raised.
Promote your auction
Once you have placed your auction, it's extremely important to promote it, via any means you can. Twitter, get tweeting! Facebook, tell all your friends! Blogging, tell all your readers! Even ring your Mum, text your sister, tell all your work colleagues. These things rely heavily on your telling people about it.
I will also be doing my own promotion of the group, this may involve me using your auction image to help promote the group. You'll need to let me know if you would rather I didn't do that.
If anyone has means of promoting the group through various media, please do so.
How to bid?
Anyone wishing to bid on a photograph, simply opens the image from the group and places a bid in the comments of that photo. You'll need to see if anyone has bid already and if they have, obviously you will need to bid higher.
The photographer can state a starting price if they wish.
Photographers should also leave an email address for those bidders who do not have a flickr account. Bidders simply email the photographer and bid that way. The photographer will transfer the bid to the comments.
Where to have your image printed?
There are many places suitable for having print made, it will depend on what country you in of course. There is a discussion thread 'Advice for Printing & Packing' where people can recommend places to have prints made.
Note on non-photographic artworks:
This group is for photographs. Sorry, any other mediums please feel free to start a new group.
Thanks for your support.
Andy

People should also point out if their print is a limited edition.
Once the bidding on particular print closes, is there a time limit by which we have to pay? I won't have money until the end of the month, but might see something I'd like to vote on in the meantime.
Thanks.

Do any of the Mods see a problem with donations to local Japan-based orgs? Local tends to waste less donated money since they are already in town and set up. I'm looking into some now.
I've seen pretty horrific waste from The Red Cross and Save the Children especially here in Haiti.

: I agree, local ones tend to be more effective - at least when development projects are concerned (but I'm not sure about a situation like this, since most of the local structures are likely to be highly in disarray). I'll ask around about local organizations. Please do the same and share any info relevant you'll find.

I donated a sum to Salvation Army International. They are based in the UK I believe but they already have people in Japan. I live in the US and heard about some of the waste and suspected fraud from organizations like Red Cross. Salvation Army I've never heard anything negative about so I donated through them. They had a link for Japan and one can specify that their donation go to Japan.

I don't wish to get into which charities are better than others but all I want to say is that the person who is auctioning the print HAS to have knowledge that the funds are going to an appropriate charity and that there is cast iron proof the funds have been paid before releasing the image.
For this reason alone, I'm sticking with the big four mentioned in the above list.

A rep from the American Red Cross was on CNN yesterday and she said $0.91 of every dollar raised goes directly to the cause. Those are great numbers!

@Carlsphotography.
A screen dump from the Red Cross webpage (upon completion of the payment) was used as proof for the Haiti earthquake auction.

@martinhanna - I think you may have misunderstood me. I was saying I will be asking for a donation to one of the four - Red Cross included, as I know the systems are in place for me to have the confidence the money has gone to a legitimate place.
Are we good?

Just a suggestion, but anyone that is unsuccessful in securing any print via their bidding, why not donate that money anyway?

you can't be sure. but at the end of the day it's just a print. will cost you very little to print and send and anyone that goes to the hassle of faking a screenshot has to be (1) very talented at forgery and (2) extremely insensitive. i would not worry if i were you.

Thanks for that Chris, your points are spot on, so no need for me to say more, and agree that is end of it.
Thanks everyone else too, for the support and help in making this group what it is.

Yes I know. The guy that set it up last time is no longer on Flickr. I will look in to that tomorrow.
martinhanna, I haven't set an ultimate end date as yet. You just set the your auction end date, decide how long you want it to run for, I would say at least a few days and probably not longer than about 7.

I don't know if it's just me but copying and pasting the links for the Red Cross, Save The Children and Oxfam still doesn't work for me, I just get generic 'page not found' messages on each of their sites when click on them once the text is pasted from here. I'll add the links into the info for my image myself but it might be worth looking at again. Is it possible to display the whole URL as this may be causing the problem?
Cheers.

@andrew - reckon we could also include in the rules that those submitting old photos shd edit date and time picture was taken so it goes to the front of their streams. that will increase views and therefore visibility for the group?

I know it states explicitly that the auction is for photographic prints only, but due to circumstances it would be very awkward for me to come up with a print.
I do, however, have Blurb printed books of my photographs I could auction, ready to send
As I see it, I could post a cover shot, provide all the auction info, and include a link to Blurb that would allow a preview of the book that would be on auction.
Does this idea fly here?

I don't think it makes an iota of difference if the post stays or not . I think by the very fact that many people here are taking time and effort to try and help is in itself a very good thing.
I notice some of these prints are selling for $300-$400 . A lot of people will not donate that much unless they get something for it . Also there is nothing to stop someone from getting a free print when they would donate anyway . I'm bidding for one.

I'm not recommending any of these, just making suggestions. you should take time to check them out.

Hi all,
Before I add my photo I was wondering if in the description I can require the donation to be done to only one *specific* charity (Japanese red cross - e.g.: www.google.com/crisisresponse/japanquake2011.html) without giving other options.
The reason being that for various reasons I would very much prefer that money go directly to the local Japanese red cross rather than to other international organisations.
Can you please let me know?
Thanks
Fabrizio
